Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Feb. 19th, 2018

Boys Basketball

Due to a pair of makeup games earlier in the week, the Galesburg Silver Streak boys basketball team played their 4th game in 6 days on Saturday with a trip to Geneseo. The Streaks ended their busy week at (3-1) with a dominating 78-39 victory over the Maple Leafs. Andrew Anderson led the Streaks with 18 points. Cornell Dotson and Khalil Hodge also posted double figure scoring outputs with 12 and 10 points respectively. Galesburg is now (21-9) with one game remaining in the regular season, a Western Big Six Conference game on Friday night in Quincy.

Wrestling

Galesburg Silver Streak wrestler Robert Castellano placed 4th in the 195 pound weight class over the weekend in the IHSA Class 2A State Finals in Champaign. Castellano dropped his winner’s bracket semi-final on Friday and went (1-1) in his matches on Saturday, including a technical fall in the 3rd place match. Knoxville’s Kage Leab placed 5th in the 152 pound class of the Class 1A State Finals for the Blue Bullet’s best finish. Leab’s teammate, Reuben Cantu went (1-2) on the weekend in the 138 pound weight division.

Swimming and Diving

The Galesburg High School boys swimming and diving team began their postseason with sectional action in Rock Island. The Silver Streaks placed 4th as a team and had a pair of student-athletes qualify for the State Finals this coming weekend. Drew Giles won the 100 yard breaststroke and Austyn White’s 1-meter dive was the best of the day as well. Both young men will move on to the finals in Evanston, beginning on Friday.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams played opening round matches in the Prairieland Conference tournament in Orion on Saturday. The 7th grade Titans fell to Knoxville 25-20, 25-22. Mariah Reading led Monmouth-Roseville with 11 points, including 10 aces. The Titans drop to (7-9) on the season. The Monmouth-Roseville 8th graders also dropped their match on Saturday in Orion, losing to Sherrard, 21-25, 25-13, 25-19. Leading scorers for the Titans was Karleigh Ashby with 5 aces, 3 kills, 11 digs and 4 blocks.
