Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Feb. 1st, 2018


Junior High

Three local 7th grade junior high boys basketball teams played last night for a chance to get to the state finals starting on Saturday. The ICS Trojans punched their ticket to the Class 1A finals in East Peoria with a 23-21 overtime win over LaSalle Trinity Catholic. A layup by CJ Johnson was the difference in that one. Johnson ended with six points. ICS was led by Cross Merritt with ten points. Nick Lewis-Bresnahan contributed seven points. The (12-8) Trojans will now play (15-3) Lovejoy at 2:30 on Saturday afternoon at East Peoria Jr. High.

Also making the finals on Saturday was the West Central Heat. The Heat defeated Augusta Southeastern in a high-scoring shootout 51-48 in the Class 2A Sectional final in Lewistown. West Central, now (18-2) on the season, will take on (16-0) Joliet Laraway at 11:30 on Saturday morning at Germantown Hills Middle School.

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans fell to Farmington 36-31 in the Class 3A Sectionals at Dunlap Middle School last night. The Titans end the season at (19-5) with the loss. They were led last night by Max Cole with 19 points. Jerome Jackson chipped in with six points. Farmington will head to the 3A finals on Saturday with a record of (24-1).

Tonight in the 8th grade Regional Finals at United Jr. High School, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans will get a rematch with Rockridge at 6:00 for a chance to get to the Farmington Sectionals next Wednesday. The Titans beat the Rockets in the Prairieland Conference tournament championship a few weeks ago.

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan Jr. High volleyball teams split a pair of matches against Mercer County at Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High in Roseville. The 7th grade Titans beat the Golden Eagles in 3 sets, led by Addie Switzer with 16 service points, including eight aces. The 8th grade Titans lost in three sets. They were led by Karleigh Ashby with 6 kills, 3 blocks and 8 digs. Both teams will take on ICS in Roseville tonight, starting at 5:30.

Girls Basketball

Last night was the the last night of the Lincoln Trail Conference high school girls basketball regular season. Annawan wrapped up their 8th straight regular season championship. They were also the tournament champs as well. The Bravettes won their 50th straight game, 74-35 over Galva, and are now (29-0) on the season. The streak is the 6th longest of all-time in the IHSA. They were led by Jayde VanHyfte’s 24 points. Galva was led by Josie William’s 14 points.

Also it was Ridgewood over United 66-48. Shaylynn Lucas led United with 15 points. Grayce Spicher led Ridgewood in points with 12. Princeville defeated West Central 66-40. Carley Lafary led West Central with 11 points. Elsewhere, it was Stark County over ROWVA 47-29 and Wethersfield defeated Mercer County 61-49.

In the Prairieland Conference, Knoxville was beaten by Brimfield 47-36.

Boys Basketball

Macomb beat state-ranked West Hancock 41-39. Carter Fayhee led Macomb with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
