Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Feb. 5th, 2018

Boys Basketball

Championship day for the boys basketball Lincoln Trail Conference tournament took place on Saturday at the Fieldhouse at United High School. Annawan is your tourney champ with a 54-37 win over Wethersfield. Owen Landwehr led the winners with 20 points. Wethersfield was led by 13 points from Colton Quagliano. Third place went to the high-scoring Mercer County Golden Eagles. They defeated Galva 93-68. Jordan Metcalf led Mercer County in scoring with 23 points. Galva’s Cooper Hoxworth led all players with 26. Princeville is your 5th place team. The Princes beat Ridgewood 52-37. Ridgewood was led by Riley Nelson and Max Nuckles with 10 points each. The United Red Storm were edged by ROWVA/Williamsfield in the 7th place game by the score of 58-53. Evan Wynne led the Storm with 20 points. Bret Woodside led R/W with 13 points. Finally, it was West Central getting a 50-33 win over Stark County in the 9th place game. Bradon Annegars led West Central with 22 points.
Tonight, the IHSA girls basketball postseason begins. The United Red Storm open up against West Hancock in Hamilton in a Class 2A contest. The game will tip-off at 7:00. In the Knoxville Class 2A Regional, Mercer County takes on Orion, also at 7:00. In Class 1A, the West Central Heat plays Mendon Unity in Mendon and ROWVA battles A-Town at the Stark County 1A Regionals.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys basketball team lost a home game on Saturday against St. Charles East. The Streaks fall 67-41. Jaylin McCants led Galesburg with 11 points.

Wrestling

The IHSA wrestling regionals took place around the state on Saturday. Monmouth-Roseville will send four wrestlers to the sectional meet this coming weekend. Kody Atwell, Jared Bolon and Josh Cerna all earned second place finishes and will move on to the Stanford Olympia Sectionals on Saturday. Jesus Rojas will also move on by placing third. Knoxville will also send four wrestlers to the sectional tournament. Reuben Cantu and Kage Leab won their weight divisions. Brandon Parrish and Isiah Jennings placed second and will move on as well. Galesburg’s Robert Castellano won his weight division and Cody Thomas will advance to sectionals with a third place finish.

Bowling

The Abingdon-Avon girls bowling teams advanced to the LaSalle-Peru Sectional with a second-place finish at the Decatur Girls Regional on Saturday. The Tornadoes finished with 4,958 pins. Vanessa Turner led A-Town with a six-game series of 1,186. Amber Stevenson bowled a 1,127 series and Alexis Wilson rolled a 6-game series of 1,059 pins.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan 7th grade boys basketball team lost its first game at the Class 1A state finals in East Peoria. The Trojans fell to Lovejoy 44-13 to finish (12-8) on the season. ICS was led by Cross Merritt with 6 points. The West Central Heat 7th grade also lost their first round Class 2A state quarterfinal game to Joliet Laraway 39-27. Kaden Droste led the Heat with 16 points.
