Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Feb. 7th, 2018

Girls Basketball

The United Red Storm season came to an end at the hands of the West Hancock Titans in Class 2A. The Storm fall to the Titans 61-35. West Hancock led 38-12 at the half and cruised from there. Carley Thompson led United with 17 points and Shaylyn Lucas chipped in with six points. West Hancock, now (13-17) on the season, now advances to play top seeded and (27-3) Illini West tonight in the first semi-final from Hamilton at 6:00. The (16-12) Monmouth-Roseville Titans take on (16-11) Sherrard in the second semi-final at 7:30. The championship game is set for tomorrow night at 7:00.

In other Class 2A regional action last night, The Orion Chargers and Alleman Pioneers advanced to tonight’s regional semi-finals with wins in Knoxville. The Chargers defeat Mercer County 56-41 the first game of the night. Karsyn McCunn led the winners with 17 points. Karli Stineman led Mer Co with 14 points. The Pioneers got a 20 point, 10 rebound double-double effort from Gabbi Loiz in their 31-22 win over Rockridge. The Pioneers are now (10-18) and the Chargers improve to (12-18). Orion will battle 2nd seeded (21-4) Farmington at 6:00 tonight at Knoxville High School and Alleman will take on (24-7) Knoxville at 7:30.

The 3rd seeded BPC Spartans were upset by 6th seeded Liberty in the Class 1A Mendon Unity Regional semi-finals. BPC’s season ends at (18-11). They were led in scoring by Madison Allen 12 points. Emma Bradford was also in double figures with 10. Lewistown had no trouble with the host Mendon Unity Mustangs in the first game of the night. The Lady Indians walk away with a 60-42 victory. Anna Heffren led Lewistown with 18 points. Lewistown is now (27-4) overall on the season.

The A-Town Tornadoes upset higher seeded ROWVA in the Stark County Regional quarterfinals last night. The (11-18) Tornadoes will now advance to tonight’s first semi-final agianst (22-8) Brimfield at 6:00 tonight. Stark County plays Ridgewood in the second game of the night at Stark County High School.
Other winners last night in Class 1A included Princeville and Elmwood getting wins in the Varna Midland Regional semis. Those two teams will matchup tomorrow night for the regional title at 7:00.

Boys Basketball

The BPC Spartans got a huge, road, comeback 57-47 win over Elmwood. The Spartans trailed by as many as nine in the second half before roaring back for the win. Jason Housenga led B-PC with 20 points while Nate Ferguson added 10 for the Spartans (20-3) (10-0).

The A-Town Tornadoes get a 31-28 victory over Lewistown in another Prairieland Conference contest. Hunter Darst and Calen Mahr led the Tornadoes with 12 points each.
