New Wellness Program Coming to United

Share

OSF Healthcare is starting a new wellness program at United High School. The program is called Discover Wellness Program. Tina Canada, certified diabetes educator, explains the event:

“It’s really kind of a take on our diabetes prevention program. Getting young people interested in eating healthy and being more active, so that they can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes in their own life. So we’re going to be talking about a lot of those same things,” Canada said.

This program will take place over a ten-week period, and ties in to the Diabetes Prevention Program, which currently has one group that meets in the evenings on Thursdays. However, a new group will be meeting, beginning March 8 at 10 a.m.

“Our diabetes prevention program is recognized by the center for disease control. We’re using their Prevent T-2 curriculum. It’s a year-long program, we start out meeting every week. We talk about healthy eating, becoming more active, overcoming barriers, learning to think good thoughts, and all things that we need to do to be able to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and live a healthier lifestyle,” Canada stated.

The Discover Wellness Program is starting at United High School, but will move to other schools as the program expands.
