Rep. Candidate Harold Determined to Make a Change

Erika Harold is a Republican candidate for the Illinois Attorney General race in 2018. She made an appearance in Monmouth for the Lincoln Day Dinner at the American Legion last Monday. After growing up in Champaign and graduating from the University of Illinois, Harold had a dream of attending Harvard Law School. Unfortunately, she did not have the sufficient funds to attend even though she had been accepted, so she took matters into her own hands.

“I had not grown up competing in pageants, but I saw that year that the Miss America pageant had scholarship money for the winner. My college advisor said, ‘You should consider that.’ And so, I went home and told my parents. I said, ‘I have how I’m going to pay for Harvard Law School.’ They said, ‘Well, what is it?’ And I said, ‘I’m going to try to become Miss America this year.’ And like any practical parents, they said, ‘And what’s your backup plan?'” Harold said.

Harold approached the challenge like a job. She took home a local pageant crown before being crowned Miss Illinois and finally achieving the unthinkable by being crowned Miss America in 2003. She graduated from Harvard Law School in 2007 debt free.

Now, Harold is looking to tackle some of the state’s biggest issues as Illinois’s chief legal officer. She plans to ensure that the rule of law and the Constitution are enforced, take on public corruption in the state, revisit worker’s compensation and criminal justice reform, and combat the opioid epidemic in the state if she is elected.

“I’m willing to fight really hard for you for the things that matter. And if I earn your vote, and you make me your next Attorney General, I will never forget who I’m fighting for. And I will never forget that it’s your interests, not the people’s interests, not the Madigan’s interests, but it’s your interests that matter each and every day,” Harold stated.
