Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Mar. 1st, 2018

Boys Basketball

IHSA boys basketball postseason play continued last night in the Ottawa Marquette Class 1A Sectionals. In what could’ve been an all-Lincoln Trail Conference sectional championship turned into a solo act as the Wethersfield Flying Geese fell to the AP Poll’s #1 ranked Class 1A team, Aurora Christian, 63-45. In his final game as a Flying Geese, Jacob Schwerbrock led everyone with 26 points. After starting the season at (1-5), Wethersfield bows out with a record of (24-9). Aurora Christian is now (25-1) and will play (28-3) Annawan tomorrow night for the right to move on to the Normal Super Sectional on Tuesday.

In the other local 1A sectional in Abingdon, it was a battle of state-ranked teams in Payson-Seymour and Peoria Quest. Quest jumped all over Payson early and often and got away with an 83-61 victory. (25-7) Quest will play (24-6) Brown County at Abingdon-Avon High School tomorrow night at 7:00 for the chance to play in the Jacksonville Super next Tuesday.

In Class 2A, it was always-tough Winnebago blowing Alleman away 59-32. It will be ‘Bago vs. Bureau Valley on Friday night on BV’s home floor for the sectional championship. Also, Deer Creek-Mackinaw, who knocked Monmouth-Roseville out of the playoffs in overtime in last week’s regional semifinal in Knoxville, kept their season alive with a 54-43 win over Williamsville. Dee-Mack will take on another Monmouth-Roseville familiar foe, (29-2) West Hancock, tomorrow night in Farmington. The winner will move on to the Springfield Super Sectional.

Large school postseason basketball continuted last night as well. A thriller of a game was held in the Rock Island Class 4A Regionals. The home team Rock Island Rocks beat Bloomington 79-76 in double overtime. JaMir Price led Rocky with 32 points in the game. The (17-11) Rocks will now play (22-7) and state-ranked Normal West tomorrow night for the right to play in next week’s Pekin Sectionals. Moline also advanced in the Danville Regional, beating Normal Community High School 53-47. Moline hadn’t played in 11 days, was led by recent transfer, sophomore Harrison Bey-Buie’s 15 points. Bey-Buie transferred in from Harvey Thornton High School in Chicago in January and has just been eligible for the past 2 weeks. Deonte Billups added 15 points as well for Moline, who will now battle Danville tomorrow night.

Finally, in class 3A, the Galesburg Silver Streaks found out their opponent for the regional final in Dunlap tomorrow night. It will be the (21-9) Stering Warriors. The Warriors beat the host Dunlap Eagles 57-34. The (22-10) Streaks will tip-off at 7:00 tomorrow night at Dunlap High School for the regional championship with the winner moving on to the LaSalle-Peru Sectional semi-finals next Tuesday night.

Junior High

The ICS Lady Trojans 7th grade volleyball team made some history Tuesday night with a Regional Championship against Cuba. The Trojans won by scores of 25-11 and 25-8. Leading the team in service points was Ava Parkins with 13 points (6 aces) and Carmyn Huston with 10 points (7 aces). Mattie Gillen led the team in kills with 4 and Ava Parkins had 9 assists. ICS will go on the road to Williamsfield on Monday at 6:30 against Peoria Limestone Walters. The ICS 8th grade will begin their Regional action Tuesday night at ICS 5:30 against the winner of Cambridge and LaHarpe.
