Spring Break Activities in Galesburg

Spring break is here and summer is right around the corner. Elizabeth Varner of the Galesburg Parks & Recreation department provided some insight to the upcoming events that are happening over Galesburg’s spring break.

For the elementary students, the Hawthorne Gym & Pool will be open form 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Children may swim at the pool for $4. The Easter Bunny will also be present from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. On March 25, the annual Easter egg hunt will take place in conjunction with Hy-Vee. Hy-Vee will be grilling hamburgers and pork chops. The Easter Bunny will be present again. The hunt starts at 1 p.m., with over 12,000 eggs hidden. There are 100 prizes up for grabs and six grand prize bikes. An egg coloring contest will also be taking place. March 26 and 28 will see the Hawthorne Gym & Pool open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with an admission price of $4.
For the junior high students, a dance will take place March 23. This dance is open to all junior high students in the area and will take place at the Lake Storey Pavilion from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be a professional DJ, and admission is $4.

For high school students, lifeguard training class will start March 23 and run through March 28. This class is open for students 15 and over.

A Wizard Academy will also take place at Hawthorne Gym & Pool.

“We’re gonna do wand-making, potions, dueling, Quidditch. There’s going to be all kinds of things that are going on. They do have to pre-register for that, but that is on Thursday, March 29, and that’s from 7:30 in the morning to 5:30 in the afternoon,” Varner said.

Varner also spoke of upcoming summer events, such as the Cubs-Cardinals trip on June 17. A bus will depart from Galesburg and take those interested to Busch Stadium for a baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals.
