The winter weather, for the most part, is behind us for 2018. Monmouth Police Chief Joe Switzer believes that is why some crimes, especially car burglaries, have returned to prominence in the area. A reported 10 burglaries happened in the area just last week. The Monmouth Police Department will do everything they can to combat this heist epidemic according to Switzer:

“We’re actively out there at night seeking these people out. The guys on third shift are making their presence known everywhere. We’re looking for these people,” he said.

Switzer urges everyone to keep their cars locked at all times, even if they are in your garage or driveway.

Monmouth’s Police Chief also touched on the nationwide school walkout that will be happening next Wednesday. Students and faculty across the country will walk out of their respective schools on Mar. 14 at 10 a.m. for 17 minutes to honor the 17 victims that were killed at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. on Valentine’s Day. Approximately 185,000 students are expected to participate in the walkout across the U.S. Chief Switzer said the MPD will have a presence in the area on that day.

“It’s fortunate that Superintendent Fletcher and Superintendent Whitsitt take this issue seriously. They really have done a lot to help improve the safety of the students at all their schools,” Switzer said.

It is unknown at this time whether students or faculty from Monmouth-Roseville or United school districts will participate in the walkout.
