Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for March 15th, 2018

l Softball

The United Red Storm softball team under the new leadership of Kevin Tyrrell got their first game in on the road at Orion. The Red Storm jumped out to a 5-0 lead and looked like they were going to get Coach Tyrrell his first win in his first attempt as a head coach. Those five runs were all United would score as the Chargers put the next 15 runs on the scoreboard to get a 15-5, five inning win. Mallory Brunswig had an early home run for the Red Storm.

The Knoxville Blue Bullet softball team defeated the Galva Wildcats 20-0 in 5 innings to run their record to (2-0). The Bullets scored 7 runs in the opening frame and never looked back. Knoxville pounded out 10 hits in the shortened game. Lauren Kavanaugh got the pitching win going 5 innings, giving up only 3 hits and no runs with seven strikeouts and issuing one walk. The Lady Bullets were led at the plate by Cassie Grady going 3 for 4 with 3 rbis. Kavanaugh helped her cause by going 2 for 4, scoring a pair of runs. Tori Secrist went 1 for 3, scoring 3 runs with 2 rbis. and 2 walks.

Also in non-conference action, it was Annawan-Wethersfield fallling to Erie-Prophetstown 9-3 and Geneseo beating state-ranked Rockridge 11-4.

Baseball

The Knoxville Blue Bullets got their season off to a great start, scoring eight runs in their first at-bat of the season, and holding on for a 13-8 win over the Galva Wildcats in Galva. Cade Shonkwiler and Zach Maulden led the offense with three hits each. Cal Engegretson had a triple among his four-hit night for the Blue Bullets. Shonkwiler had three doubles and Maulden had three rbis. Gunnar Spivey had two hits and three rbis for Galva.

The Macomb Bombers also got a win on their first game on the diamond. The Bombers came back in the late innings to defeat Jacksonville 10-7. Trailing 7-6, Macomb scored a pair of runs in the 6th and 7th innings to get the win. Ben Higgins and Brandon Bickers each had three hits, with Bickers driving in four runs with two doubles and a triple.

Orion beat Ridgewood 7-4 and Rockridge falls to Geneseo 6-2 in other IHSA baseball finals from yesterday.
