Baseball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan baseball and softball teams got their 2018 seasons underway yesterday with home games. The Titan baseball team hosted Annawan-Wethersfield at Sunny Lane Field in Monmouth. Jordan Cheek got the start on the mound for Monmouth-Roseville. Cheek gave up an unearned run in the top of the 1st inning but would avoid further damage after loading the bases with nobody out by striking out the next three batters. The Titans were held off the scoreboard until the bottom of the 4th, where they would put a 3-spot on the board, highlighted by a pair of errors by A/W. Nick Corman relieved Cheek and promptly gave up two runs, one of which were unearned. Like Cheek, Corman would settle down to retire 7 of the next 8 batters and would eventually be credited with the win as Monmouth-Roseville scores a solo run in the bottom of the 5th and a two runs in the bottom of the 6th. Jack Thompson’s RBI double in the 6th brought home Austin Johnson with the final run. Despite getting only three total hits, Monmouth-Roseville gets a 6-3 win to start their season.

The Knoxville Blue Bullet baseball team improved their record to (2-0) on the season with a 3-2 win over ROWVA/Williamsfield. The Blue Bullets only mustered two hits in the game but took advantage of five R/W errors to score just enough runs to get the win. Cal Engebretson goes the distance on the mound for Knoxville, giving up four hits, no earned runs with eight strikeouts.

Softball

With a pair of games getting postponed this week, the Titan softball team picked up an extra game on the schedule yesterday afternoon, welcoming the Ridgewood Spartans to Monmouth Park. Monmouth-Roseville falls to the Spartans 15-3. The Titans only trailed 5-3 after three complete innings but a six-run top of the 4th did more than enough damage. Cora Neal, Bianca Luna, Chloe Russell and Lily Cundiff all had hits for Monmouth-Roseville. Cundiff’s hit was her first home run of her career, a 2-run blast in the bottom of the 2nd.
