MONMOUTH, Ill. – A pair of Monmouth diamond gems – Becca Gallis (Kernville, Calif./Kernville) and Jake Starkey (Morton, Ill./Morton) – returned from their respective softball and baseball spring trips to Florida with the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week awards in tow.

Gallis earned the league’s Softball Position Player of the Week honor after swinging the hot bat in Florida, hitting a team-high .483 in 10 games. The sophomore, who caught and served as the designated player, opened last Monday’s 7-0 blanking of Carthage with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. She added a trio of home runs Thursday, hitting two in 10-5 win over Lebanon Valley and one in an 8-4 loss to Finlandia. For the week, Gallis hit .483 (14-for-29) with three homers, seven RBIs, and 1.000 slugging percentage and a .516 on-base percentage.

An exercise science major, Gallis is the daughter of William and Sheila Gallis.

Starkey was named baseball’s Pitcher of the Week after nearly breaking a season record in the first week of the season. The junior righty recorded three saves last week to go with one from Sunday to record four saves in a little over a week, just one shy of the Scots’ season record. Starkey surrendered just one run, none earned, while serving as the Monmouth closer. A centerfielder by trade, Starkey rushed to the mound is all three appearances and shut down the opposition. At the plate, Starkey hit .375 with five runs scored.

A wellness administration major, Starkey is the son of Tracey Debold and Jon Starkey.
