MONMOUTH, Ill. – Monmouth’s Harry Sanchez (Tampa, Fla./Sickles) accomplished a feat the Scots haven’t seen in 19 years and earned the Midwest Conference Position Player of the Week award for his effort.
Sanchez delivered a rare birthday treat for Coach Alan Betourne on Sunday. Playing on the coaches’ birthday, the junior hit for the cycle – a feat last accomplished by Hall of Famer Casey Boydstun in 1999 – as Monmouth swept Simpson in a twinbill 9-5, 14-6. His Game 2 performance included a key two-run triple in the Scots’ 10-run fifth. He warmed up for the nightcap with a two-hit effort in the opener. The sweep came on the heels of an 11-9 loss at Eureka last Wednesday. Game 2 at Eureka was called after seven innings due to darkness tied at 4-4. For the week, Sanchez hit .429 with four RBIs, a homer, two triples, a double, one stolen base and five runs scored.
