Monmouth bounced back from a narrow loss to earn the split with Cornell Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 4-3 decision in the opener and rallying back with a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

The Rams touched starter Liz Hippen for three first inning runs and added an unearned score in the fourth to hold off the Scots. Hippen helped get one run back with an RBI groundnut in the second and two batters later Kaylee Kurtz stroked a run-scoring single to close the gap to 3-2. Following the Rams’ run in the fourth, the Scots closed within 4-3 when Laura Dulee led off with a double  and eventually scored on pinch-hitter Megan Corniels‘ ground out. The Scots’ sixth inning threat was short-lived when the Rams turned an inning-ending double play and then retired Monmouth in order in the seventh.

The Scots banged out 10 hits in the nightcap to support Zelinda Taylor‘s complete game win. Dulee led off the Scots’ first with her first of three hits in the game and came home on a Becca Gallis base knock. Cornell knotted the game at 1-1 on a fifth-inning solo homer, but surrendered the go-ahead run to the Scots in the bottom of the sixth. Dulee’s third hit of the game – a two-out double – plated Alison Trettin who picked up her second hit of the game with a one out single to set the stage for Dulee’s winning RBI.

Monmouth hosts Grinnell Thursday as date No. 2 of a four-date home stand. The Scots wrap up their home season Saturday and Sunday.
