Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for April 25th, 2018

Track and Field

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys and girls track and field teams won both of their respective divisions at the Mercer County Golden Eagle Invitational last night in Aledo. The A-Town boys were 3rd, Knoxville boys were 5th and the United Red Storm boys were 7th. Some area winners included Monmouth-Roseville’s Matthew Burris in the 100 meter dash…..Akira Lindsey was the discus champ….double winner, Riley Dulin, claimed the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Jamonny Skinner was a triple winner. Skinner won the 300 meter hurdle race, the long jump AND the triple jump. His 22’8″ leap in the long jump set a new school record that was previously held by Martel Hunter. He just missed being a 4-time winner last night, as his 110 meter hurdle time was just .25 off the winning time. A-Town’s Jay Allbright was 2nd in the 100 meter dash and 3rd in the 200 meter. United’s Cade Whitsitt was 3rd in the 800 meter run and Stewart Svob was 4th in the long jump event. Turning to the ladies, Monmouth-Roseville had a number of first place finishes. Maddie Blaesing won the 400 meter dash, Arika Hofmann crossed the finish line first in the 800 and 1600 meter runs and Riley Huston threw the shot put farther than all of her competitors as well. A-Town had winners from Emma Ginther in the long jump, Emily Wilson in the discus and Natalie Kern in the 3200 meter run. United’s top finishers included Shalyn Lucas’ 4th place in the 1600 meter run and Carolina Cruz’s 4th in the 3200 meter race. Winners for the Knoxville girls were Haley Strom in the high jump and Kylie MacDonald in the pole vault.

Softball

The West Central Heat softball team’s offense was as warm as their namesake last night at Monmouth Park. The Heat put 21 runs on the scoreboard, while shutting down the Monmouth-Roseville Titan offense in a 21-0 non-conference victory. West Central took advantage of five Titan errors and 8 walks, also adding 10 hits of their own. Reagan Spence was the hero at the plate and in the circle as she blasted a home run, went 3-for-5 with 5 rbis. Carley Lafary also had five rbis for the Heat. Spence got the pitching win, going five innings, giving up three hits with 10 strikeouts. Cora Neal, Lanie Tate and Gracie Cuni had the lone hits for Monmouth-Roseville.

The United Red Storm softball team played yet another close, extra-inning ballgame last night, this time on the road agaisnst Erie-Prophetstown. The Storm fall 7-6 in eight innings. Marley Lair led United with a 1-for-2, 2 rbi day at the plate.

The Knoxville Blue Bullets give up 13 runs in the top of the 7th inning and lose to Orion 16-5. Lauren Kavanaugh was 3-for-4 with 3 rbis for Knoxville. Cayden Mines homered for the Blue Bullets as well.

Baseball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan baseball team traveled to the Quad Cities last night for a date with the number 2 team in the state of Illinois in class 2A, the Alleman Pioneers. The Pioneers score five runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to get an 8-1 win. Jordan Cheek had a pair of hits for Monmouth-Roseville, who fall to (10-2) overall on the season. The Pioneers are now (17-2).

The A-Town Tornadoes’ 11 game winning streak comes to an end with a 5-4 Prairieland Conference loss to Farmington, in Farmington. After taking a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the 7th, the Farmers score 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to get the win. A bunt single by Alejandro Romero scored Nick Johnson with the walk-off winning run.

The Knoxville Blue Bullets stopped a 2-game skid with a dominating 21-0 win over Stark County. 20 of those runs were scored within the first 3 innings. Noah Harlan was 3-for-5 with four rbis for Knoxville. Alex Vannaken was 2-for-3 with rbis and Cade Shonkwiler was 2-for-4, while knocking in three runs himself. Todd Abraham got the complete game pitching win, going five innings with two strikeouts.

The Galesburg Silver Streak sophomore baseball team’s offense struggled in a 3-0 loss to Washington. Adam Stewart collected the only 2 hits on the night for Galesburg. The sophomores are now 6-5 on the year.
The Galesburg freshman baseball team got a win over Mercer County 10-3 to improve their record to (8-4). Reid Stufflebeam had three RBIs to lead the Streaks. James Kisler gets the pitching win, scattering four hits, giving up no earned runs, while striking out four Golden Eagle hitters in his 5.2 innings of work.

Tennis

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys tennis team lost a Western Big Six Conference match 5-4. Getting singles wins for The Silver Streaks were Cole Petrie, Isaiah Mowen, Lorenzo Sanchez and Christopher Pamatmat.

Soccer

The Silver Streak girls soccer team was blanked by United Township 9-0 as well.

Junior High

Wethersfield Jr. High hosted the Flying Geese Jr. High Boys and Girls Invitational. Both of the Monmouth-Roseville 7th and 8th grade girls won their divisions. The 7th grade Titan’s Chevelle Wolf won two individual events, winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Monmouth-Roseville also got a pair of wins in the relays. The 8th grade Titans also had a double winner, Karleigh Ashby ran faster than anyone in the 100 and 200 meter races. The 8th grade also had a pair of relay wins. The Monmouth-Roseville 7th grade boys took 4th place as a team. Zander Martin won the shot put. The Titan 8th grade boys were 2nd as a team. Their 4×200 meter relay team of Zemi Ismali, Michael Mendoza, Logan Bratcher and Alexis Velazquez were victorious for the 8th grade’s lone win.
