Monmouth College Baseball Uses Big Innings and Extra Bases in Sweep Over Grinnell

The Scots avenged a sweep by Grinnell last week, turning the tables on the Pioneers in Iowa with a 13-5, 6-1 sweep to move into second place in the Midwest Conference South Division.

Shutout through six innings in Game 1 and trailing 4-0, the Scots pushed seven runs across in the seventh and five more in the eighth to give reliever Tyler McDonald a three-inning win. Harry Sanchez broke the ice with a run-scoring triple and Jake Starkey followed with a two-RBI three-bagger as Monmouth sent 11 men to the plate in the seventh. The Scots batted around again in the eighth as Starkey added another RBI triple.Grant Myers equaled Starkey’s three RBIs with a 3-for-6 effort at the plate.

Monmouth came from behind again in the  late game with a four-run fourth all off the bat of Myers. The seniors’ two-out grand slam gave the Scots a lead they would not surrender as Connor McDonald twirled seven innings of six-hit ball for his first win of he season. Dalton Phillips piled on the Pioneer with a solo blast in the eighth for good measure.Myers finished the twinbill with seven RBIs and three runs scored.

The Scots are scheduled to travel to Mauston, Wis., this weekend for the MWC Crossover with the league’s North Division Teams.
