Monmouth banged out 26 hits in Saturday’s twinbill for a 16-5, 10-6 sweep of Illinois College to take all four games in the series after sweeping the Blueboys in Jacksonville on Thursday.
Matt Temaner collected a team-high four RBIs for the Scots, including two with a game-ending single in Monmouth’s nine-run eighth to end the game via the mercy rule. Leading 7-5 entering the bottom of the ninth, Monmouth took advantage of three IC errors to send 12 men to the plate. The Scots had trailed 4-1 until the bottom of the sixth when then opened the frame with three straight hits on their way to a five-run inning as Temaner picked up his first two RBIs. Connor McDonald worked seven innings to pick up his third win of the season against no losses.
Grant Myers went 4-for-4 in the nightcap, driving in three runs as Monmouth banged out 16 hits. Tied at 3-3 in the fourth, the Scots capitalized on a walk and wild pitch as Myers piled on with an RBI double. Myers added two more RBIs with another double in the eighth for insurance runs. Asa Stevenson fanned six through five innings to earn his third win.
The Scots host Illinois Wesleyan Sunday in a 1 p.m. single game.
