Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for May 21st, 2018

Baseball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan baseball team took on the Class 2A Illini West Regional host Chargers in Carthage. The game featured a matchup of two outstanding pitchers. The Titans sent out Nick Corman, while the Chargers had their 3-sport star, Jackson Porter on the mound. In game that only took a little over an hour and a half to play, it was the Chargers that played well extremely well defensively on their way to a 2-0 win over the Titans. Monmouth-Roseville’s Corman made only two mistakes on the day but Illini West’s Kennedy Gooding made him pay for both as Gooding smashed two solo home runs for the only tallies of the ballgame. They were the 3rd and 4th straight homers for Gooding. He hit two straight in his last two at-bats in the Charger’s semi-final win over Knoxville on Thursday night. Monmouth-Roseville was held to three hits in the game by Porter, who also struck out ten Titan batters. The Titans end the season with a record of (16-7). Illini West moves on to Wednesday’s Sherrard Sectional semi-final with a record of (16-11). The Chargers will now battle Brimfield/Elmwood in the first game of a 2-game night at 4:30. Brimfield/Elmwood, (25-5) overall on the season, was a 10-0 winner over Midwest Central in their own regional on Saturday morning. The second semi-final on Wednesday pits Eureka and the Orion Regional champ, Orion Chargers. The Chargers beat their Three Rivers Conference rival, Rockridge Rockets 10-0 as well.

Also in Class 2A baseball regional championship action, it was Alleman over Mendota 13-3.

In Class 1A baseball, ROWVA/Williamsfield losing to Illini Bluffs 10-3 to end new head coach, Arnie Gonzalez’s first season at (21-10-1). Jason Clark had two hits for ROWVA/Williamsfield.

The A-Town Tornado’s baseball season ended with a 4-2 loss to Delavan. The Tornadoes gave up three first inning runs and couldn’t quite get over the early deficit. A-Town had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the 7th but a strikeout ended the contest. Jacob Repp was 2-for-4 to lead the Tornadoes, who end the year with a record of (19-9).

Ridgewood lost to Putnam County 10-1 in the Stark County Regional. The Spartans end a successful season with a record of (23-8-1).

The Galesburg Silver Streak baseball team ended their regular season schedule by splitting a pair of games in the Streaks Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Streaks beat Peoria Notre Dame 4-3 on Friday night, with Donnivan Reed getting a walk-off rbi double that scored Conner Aten with the winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Renegade Schott had two of the six Galesburg hits in the game. The Silver Streaks fell behind 6-0 after five innings on their way to a 7-2 loss to Dunlap on Saturday afternoon. Schott continued his nice day at the plate, going 3-for-4 in that one. Galesburg will take a (19-14) overall record into their Class 3A Geneseo Regional semifinal against Limestone on Wednesday night at 7:00 at the Richmond Hill Athletic Complex in Geneseo.

Softball

In Class 2A softball, it was state-ranked Rockridge beating a good Tremont team 5-2…..Illini West over West Hancock 11-1 and Brimfield/Elmwood shutting out Annawan/Wethersfield 8-0. Orion dropped a close 5-4 decision to Peru St. Bede 5-4.

In Class 1A, the A-Town Tornado softball team’s season ended with a 4-2 loss to North Fulton in the Illini Bluffs Regional final. Elsewhere in 1A softball, Princeville will move on to the A-Town Sectional semi-finals with a 5-2 win over ROWVA/Williamsfield.

The Silver Streak softball team also split a pair of games over the weekend. Galesburg shut out Metamora in the first of two games on Saturday at Galesburg High School. Emily Blucker pitched a 3-hitter against the Lady RedBirds. She had four strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter. Andrea Sampson led the Galesburg offense, going 2-for-3. Galesburg lost to Sterling 11-0 in five innings in game two. The Silver Streaks were held to three hits in the game. Galesburg is now (12-18) and start their postseason with a Class 3A Dunlap Regional quarterfinal matchup with Peoria Richwoods today at 4:30 at Galesburg High School. The Silver Streaks get to host the first round by being the higher seeded team. With a win, the Lady Streaks would play regional top-seed Peoria Notre Dame tomorrow at 4:30 at Dunlap High School.

Track and Field

Galesburg High School junior Daija Range placed 7th in the shot put event at the Class 2A State Finals in Charleston and fellow junior Deante Pulley will participate in the boys state finals in Charleston this weekend with a 2nd place finish in the triple jump event at the Dunlap Sectionals on Friday night.

Monmouth-Roseville’s Arika Hofmann ended her high school track career with an 11th place finish in the Class 2A 800 meter run at the 2A State Finals.

In Class 1A, the BPC/WP Sparclone’s Diedre Lorton placed 6th in the high jump event at the finals in Charleston. Lorton’s teammate Maleigha Huston brought home two medals back home with her. She finished 5th in the 400 meter dash and 10th in the 800 meter run. Also, the Sparclone’s Taylor Larson was 4th in the 400 meter dash. Knoxville’s Breena Shreeves was 11th in the 800 meter and the Blue Bullets 4X400 meter relay team of Shreeves, Mackenzie Pruett, Olivia Hall and Anna Larson crossed the finish line in 7th place.

Junior High

The Class 2A Jr. High School track and field state finals were held in East Peoria over the weekend. The Monmouth-Roseville Titans had a pair of top-20 finishes and set a few school records along the way. Chevelle Wolf’s time of 27.48 seconds placed her in 12th place in the 7th grade girls 200 meter dash. Her time was a new Monmouth-Roseville record. Also setting a school record was Lexi Finnicum in the 7th grade girls discus event. She had a toss of 79’10” that was good enough for 17th overall. Omar Carillo’s 25th place time in the 7th grade boys 800 meter run included a school-best time of 2:23.14. Continuing a nice for the 7th graders was the girls 4X100 meter relay team of Wolf, Addie Switzer, Mariah (Muh-rie-uh) Reading (Redding) and Yoselim (Yoe-suh-leem) Hernandez. They placed 25th overall with a school record time of 55.38.

Other top, area finishers included the Knoxville Blue Bullet 8th grade girls 4X400 relay team. They brought home a 7th place medal, as did A-Town 7th grade girls shot putter and discus thrower, Brookly Piper. She was 6th in the discus event. Lombard 7th grader Joseph Moren was 11th in the boys high jump. Churchill Jr. High had a 2-time medalist in 7th grade student, Syriah (Suh-rie-uh) Boyd. She was 4th in the 200 meter dash and 11th in the high jump. Syriah almost got a 3rd medal in the 100 meter dash, placing 13th overall. The Churchill Blue Streak 7th grade boys 4X200 meter relay team crossed the finish line with the 12th best time. Congratulations to all these student-athletes on a great weekend in East Peoria.
