MC Baseball Caps Off Historic Sports Year

Share

This weekend Monmouth College Fighting Scots had a successful weekend with their baseball team. The Monmouth Fighting Scots hosted the Midwest Conference Championship tournament for baseball in which the Scots won the 2018 conference championship against St. Norbert and Lawrence with a 3-0 record. This is a huge success because Fighting Scots baseball has not won the Midwest Conference since 2002.

In addition, Monmouth College has for the first time in its history, won all major athletic conferences in the same year. Monmouth College won five major conferences for 2018, which are Fighting Scots football, basketball, indoor and outdoor track and baseball. Baseball’s achievement was not an easy title to obtain; the weather this weekend consisted of rain and thunderstorms which caused four one hour delays throughout the tournament.

In an interview today with head coach for Fighting Scots baseball team Alan Betourne and Sports Information Director Dan Nolan, they discussed the success of the baseball team. Coach Betourne states that “pitching” in general was the main factor that played into claiming the championship. Now the baseball team will play at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois against University of Wisconsin Whitewater starting this Thursday at 7:45pm and playing until the end of Sunday the 19th at the NCAA Division III regional tournament. The interview was wrapped up with coach Betourne stating that “All athletes are very close … It brings the campus together and all the athletes together.”
