Grant Myers jacked two homeruns in Sunday’s nightcap at Cornell to earn a split with the Rams, keeping Monmouth in the running for their first Midwest Conference South Division crown since 2009. Teh Scots took the nihgtcap 15-4 after dropping the opener 10-7.
The Scots used two big innings in Game 2, plating five runs in the second inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead. After Cornell rallied and batted around in a four-run eighth to cut heir deficit to 8-4, Monmouth put their first eight batters on to put the game away with a seven-run ninth. Myers ripped a three-run homer to right center just an inning after delivering a solo blast with two outs. Harry Sanchez followed Myers’ ninth-inning roundtripper with a two-run shot as the Scots took the weekend series three games to one. Asa Stevenson worked seven solid innings, striking out 10, walking two and scattering four hits to earn his fourth win.
The Rams used a four-run sixth in the day’s first game to clip the Scots.Sanchez drove in one run and Mike Dato two as the Scots jumped on the Rams for a quick 3-0 first inning lead. They piled on two more in the fourth and another two in the fifth to build a 7-5 lead before the Rams batted around in the sixth, taking a 9-7 lead. The Scots put runners on in each of the last three innings, but couldn’t drive in the tying run.
The Sunday split forces Grinnell and Illinois College to complete their suspended game to determine the top two finish in the MWC South division. A win by Grinnell gives the Pioneers the South title, but a win by IC earns the Scots their first South crwon since 2009. Ironically, the game will be played at Monmouth’s Glasgow Field Monday afternoon at 4:30.
