America’s Run for the Fallen 2018 is coming to the Monmouth and Galesburg area this Friday, June 15th culminating in a ceremony to be held at Lincoln Park in Galesburg at 6 p.m. Runners began in April of this year in California and will continue to run through August 5th with their final stop at Arlington National Cemetary after running through 19 states and more than 6,000 miles. Six core runners have been involved during the entire course for the event, with one woman running more than 800 miles already. The runners stop at every mile along the run to dedicate that mile to one or more fallen heroes. Part of the donations made throughout the event are being used to buy the runners new shoes.

The runners will come through Monmouth from Biggsville on Highway 34 on Friday at approximately 4:30 p.m. and stop for refreshments at the Department of Transportation in Monmouth, courtesy of Smithfield, County Market and McDonald’s, and then run from Monmouth to Cameron, turning left at the railroad tracks and taking Munson Road to Highway 41 in to Galesburg past the prison and Yemm Ford. Bob Spears, Executive Director of the Defenders of Freedom Veterans Home explains the next step:

“That’s where we would like to have as many people as we can get out to welcome them to Galesburg. They will be running down Losey to Lincoln, Lincoln out to 34 then onto Altona. In Altona they will be stopping at the gas station on that curve and we will bring them back by bus to Galesburg that evening for a 6:00 p.m. ceremony at Lincoln Park,” Spears stated.

All are welcomed to attend the ceremony at Lincoln Park where you can hear from Dan Swanson, State Representative from the area, and the Mayor of Galesburg, who will be welcoming the runners to the area. Spears is very excited about having this great opportunity for our area to be able to come out and cheer on the runners to honor the fallen soldiers and wants to encourage all to attend:

“I can’t emphasize enough about being there to observe this thing, to see these runners that have put their all into it for the veterans of our world that have gave their all,” shares Spears.

America’s Run for the Fallen is a tribute to all service men and women who have lost their lives since 9/11 in the War on Terror. For more information about America’s Run for the Fallen 2018 log onto www.runforthefallen.org/2018-run-information.
