Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Aug. 23rd, 2018

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans and United Red Storm were on the road for a pair of non-conference matchups. The Titans were in Aledo to take on the Mercer County Golden Eagles, where they came home with a 25-21, 25-19 victory. Leading Monmouth-Roseville was Carly Gillen with 15 kills and six blocks. She also led the team in digs with seven. Mackenzie Connell handed out 14 assists as the Titans start the season at (2-0). They’ll play the second of their back-to-back road matches with a trip to Knoxville tonight.

The United Red Storm gave the Western Big Six Conference’s Alleman Pioneers on the Pioneer’s home floor all they could handle before eventually falling 29-27, 25-20. Carly Thompson led the Strom with nine kills and 17 digs. Riley Tyrrell dished out 15 assists and Jenna Bentz had 13 digs for United, who are now (1-1) on the season.

Golf

The United Red Storm boys and girls golf teams split a pair of matches against Elmwood at Gibson Woods Golf Course. The Red Storm boys lost to the Trojans 184-196. Caleb Copeland led the Red Storm with a 47. Dhylan Hepner and Andrew Fuller each had 49s and Ian McVey shot a 51. The United girls got a 210-231 win over the Trojans. Emily Grodjesk was the meet medalist with 46. She was joined in the scoring quartet by Erin Glisan’s 52, and Paige McKeown and Haley Marshall’s matching 56’s.

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville boys soccer team lost their season opener to Illini Bluffs 1-0 in Roseville.

The Macomb Bombers also got their season underway and earned a 3-0 win over the Orion/Sherrard co-op. Cam Baker got a goal and an assist, as did Sumner Roberts. Leighton Holthaus also scored for the Bombers. Carter Benson made seven saves to get the victory in goal.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan junior high baseball team pulled out a 4-3 win over United at the Field of Dreams in Monmouth yesterday. The Trojans took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st and then the two starting pitchers for both clubs, AJ Jenks for United and Jake Steele for ICS, took over and held the other scoreless until United scored their first runs in the top of the 5th. The Red Storm score two runs to take a 2-1 lead but ICS responded with a 3-spot in the bottom half of the 5th. United would get a solo run in the 6th to cut the deficit to 4-3 but ICS holds on for the 1-run win. Both teams are now (3-2) on the season. Zach Almaguer was 3-for-4 for ICS.
