Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Aug. 27th, 2018

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan volleyball team won the championship of the Macomb Invitational, played at Western Illinois University. The Titans went (4-1), tying the host Bombers. Monmouth-Roseville won the least-points-allowed tiebreaker to bring home the 1st place trophy. The Titans defeated Rock Island, Payson-Seymour and Bushnell-Prairie City to go undefeated in pool play, then beat Lewistown, before falling to Macomb 25-23, 25-22.

In other IHSA volleyball tournaments on Saturday, Fieldcrest beat Plano in three sets to earn the Spring Valley Hall Early Bird Tournament championship. Sherrard placed 4th. The host Wethersfield Flying Geese finished 3rd in their invitational tournament. Eureka claimed the tourney championship with a 21-19, 22-24, 15-10 victory over the Orion Chargers.

Golf

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys golf team hosted their 15th Annual Titan Invite at Gibson Woods Golf Course on Saturday. The Titans placed 12 out of 20 schools with a team total of 358 strokes. The Knoxville Blue Bullets were 19th with a 468, led by Justin Betz’s 108. Monmouth-Roseville’s Nick Corman got a 14th place individual medal, shooting a 77. He was joined in the scoring quartet by Tyler Sell’s 91 and Aaron Blindt and Reece Kane shot matching 95’s. Macomb placed 4th, led by Braeden Duncan’s 2nd place score of 1-under par 70. Macomb’s team score of 315 was 14 shots behind Quincy Notre Dame’s tournament winning score of 301.

The Ridgewood Spartan and Galesburg Silver Streak boys golf teams took part in the Geneseo Invite at Maple Bluff Golf Course. Ridgewood was 6th as a team with a team score of 328. Spartan golfer, Thomas Bumann tied for 3rd individually with a 74. Bill Bumann was 15th with a 79. Galesburg was 10th out of 12 schools with a team total of 354. They were led by Justin Endthoff’s 6th place stroke total of 75. Lucas Watson tied for 20th with an 80.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls golf team was 8th of 9 schools in the Rochester Rocket Invitational at Lincoln Greens Golf Course. Kirsten Osborn was solid again, carding an 83 for 4th place overall.

Soccer

The Galesburg boys soccer team brought home the tournament championship in the Stillman Valley Colin Smith Invitational. The Streaks went (3-0), beating Roanoke-Benson 5-3 in the first round and then shutting out Stillman Valley 1-0 and then beating Peoria Richwoods 2-0 in the final. Eight different Galesburg players scored in the tournament. The Silver Streaks are now (4-0) overall on the season.

Swimming and Diving

Four Monmouth-Roseville Titan girl swimmers participated in a quad-meet in Rock Island on Saturday. Freshman Cally Tate was 3rd in the 200 yard freestyle and 5th in the 100 yard backstroke. Senior Ashlynn Quinn was 3rd in the 50 freestyle and 4th in the 100 free. Those two combined with Kena McCance and Abby Sikorski to place 4th in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan junior high baseball team hosted a jamboree on Saturday at the Field of Dreams in Monmouth. The Trojans went (1-1), beating Stark County 8-6 and losing to Brimfield 6-5. Nick Lewis-Bresnahan was 4-for-7 at the plate in the two ballgames.

West Central went (2-0) in the Hancock County Tournament and will take on Carthage for the tournament championship at 6:00 tonight in LaHarpe.
