Body Found at Cedar Fork in Galesburg

Galesburg, IL (September 17, 2018) Saturday, September 15, 2018, at 6:57 p.m. Galesburg Police Officers responded to a report of an unresponsive person at the bottom of Cedar Fork, 75 yards east of Academy Street. Cedar Fork is a concrete canal that runs northeast to southwest through Galesburg parallel to the BNSF railroad tracks. A pedestrian walking northbound on Academy Street spotted the person in Cedar Fork. Officers and Emergency Medical personnel arrived and found the person was deceased.

Earlier on Saturday September 15, 2018, a missing person report was taken reporting Tyler L. Smith of 4487 Leatherwood Ct., Concord, California had failed to show up for Naval Reserve training in Galesburg. According to the report, Smith and a friend were at a local tavern Friday evening and Smith was last seen leaving the bar on foot at about 11:30 p.m. alone. Smith had recently moved from Rochelle, IL to Concord, California and was in Galesburg fulfilling Naval Reserve obligations.

The man found in Cedar Fork has been identified as Tyler L. Smith, age 23, of Concord, California. No signs of injury or foul play were found with Smith. An autopsy has been performed revealing Smith died of drowning.
