Local High School and Junior High Sports Report for Sept. 5, 2018

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan volleyball team traveled to Camp Point Central last night for a match against the Central Panthers. It was a non-conference matchup between the two West Central Conference North Division rivals. With the addition of Quincy Notre Dame, the conference schedule has been pared down to one meeting between the division schools instead of two. When QND was added to the conference, the Raiders requested that they only play the other North Division schools once so the division schedule is now just four games instead of eight. Monmouth-Roseville came home with a 25-14, 25-17 win. Carly Gillen led the way with ten kills and three blocks. Camilla Bethel served eight points, with four aces. Delaney Woodard handed out ten assists and Santina Alfano hustled her way to four digs.

The United Red Storm also got a nice 25-22, 26-24 road win at Southeastern High School in Augusta. Carly Thompson registered twelve kills and nine digs. Josie Bentz added 13 digs. Jenna Bentz dished out ten assists. The Red Storm are now (2-2) on the season.

The A-Town Tornado volleyball team beat the ROWVA Tigers 25-22, 25-11 in Oneida. Payton Florine led A-Town with five kills. She also added eights digs and served five aces.

The Knoxville Blue Bullets beat Ridgewood 25-16, 25-18 at home. Lauren Kavanagh led Knoxville with six kills. Alis Bickell chipped in with five kills and nine digs. Makayla Benson gave out 14 assists and Shelby Shreeves made nine digs and dished out nine assists for the Blue Bullets. Tatum Miller made four kills and three blocks at the net and Alli Lambin gave seven assists for Ridgewood.

Bushnell-Prairie City defeated Peoria Heights 25-13, 25-14 in Prairieland Conference play. Kierstyn Pemble led Bushnell-Prairie City with three kills. Lily Powell had nine digs and six aces and Sarah Hood served for 15 points and totaled five assists for the Spartans.

After dropping the first set 28-26 to Peoria Richwoods, the Galesburg Silver Streaks came back to win the last two sets, and the match, 25-19, 25-22. Chloe McCarthy smashed eight kills and had six digs for Galesburg. Kylie Fyke had six blocks and four service aces. Sam Rogers had 14 digs and Maddie Carlson handed out 16 assists.

Also, North Fulton beat South Fulton in Prairieland play 25-22, 25-10 and West Prairie also got a Prairieland Conference win over Farmington, 25-18, 25-22

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville boys soccer offense broke out in a big way last night against Riverdale, getting a 10-0 victory over the Rams on the road. Six different Titans scored in the match, including three goals from Oscar Lopez-Sanchez. Alan Ayala and Jacques Bahingana with two apiece. Monmouth-Roseville is now (3-3-1) on the season.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Rock Island to fall to (5-2) on the season.

Cross Country

Due to weather issues on Saturday, the Galesburg High School cross country invitational got rescheduled to last night at Lake Storey Park. The Streak boys placed 2nd and the Streak girls were 3rd. For the boys, Aaron Burrows led the way in 6th. For the Galesburg girls, Kaitlyn Pedergast was 3rd to lead them individually.

Golf

The Silver Streak girls golf team went (1-1) in their tri-meet against Mercer County and Ridgewood, shooting a 211 as a team. Galesburg’s Kirsten Osborn was meet medalist with a 38.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan junior high baseball team got a pair of wins in the West Prairie Tournament in Colchester. The Trojans defeated West Prairie 5-1 in the opener. Leo Mahoney and Nick Lewis-Bresnahan each had a pair of hits to lead ICS. Jake Steele got the complete game, pitching win. The Trojans shut out Brown County 4-0 in the nightcap. Steele, Zach Almaguer and CJ Johnson each had two hits in that one, with Johnson going the distance on the mound to get the complete game, shutout. He also fired 12 strikeouts as well. United opens tournament play with a pair of games tonight at 4:30 and 6:30.
