Local High School and Junior High Sports Report on Sept. 17, 2018

Junior High

The ICS Trojan and West Central Heat junior high baseball teams will play for Regional Championships later today. The Trojans defeated Williamsfield 12-1 on Saturday afternoon in the IESA Class 1A Williamsfield regional. CJ Johnson went 1-for-2 with a double and five rbis. Jake Steele, Zach Almaguer and David Simmons each had a pair of rbis. ICS will take on Brimfield, a 9-5 winner over Stark County in the first semi-final on Saturday, at 4:30 in Williamsfield. The West Central Heat and United Red Storm played their Class 2A semi-final in Nauvoo on Saturday afternoon. With the game tied at 3-all after four innings, the Heat came up with two runs in the bottom of the 5th and then added an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th to get a 6-3 win over the Red Storm. Kayden Droste led the West Central offense, going 2-for-2. Jacob Quigley wsa 1-for-3 with two rbis for the Heat as well. Abel Wilson was 1-3 with all three rbis for United. West Central will play the hosts, Nauvoo-Colusa at 4:30 this afternoon in Nauvoo.

Cross Country

Many area high school teams partcipated in the Dunlap Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. Ladies first……The host Dunlap Eagles claimed the team championship, with Knoxville placing 4th, Galesburg was 8th and Monmouth-Roseville was 12th. Knoxville’s Breena Shreeves was the highest local individual runner with an 11th place finish. Bailey Harris was 14th and Mackenzie Rader was 15th for the Blue Bullets as well. Galesburg was led by Kaitlyn Pendergast in 21st. United’s Anne Gregory was 20th, A-Town’s Natalie Kern was 48th and Monmouth-Roseville’s Maggie Huston was 58th. On the boy’s side, Metamora was the team champ, Galesburg was 3rd and Knoxville was 9th. Galesburg’s Aaron Burrows had a fantastic 3rd place finish and his teammate Mark Frenster was 9th. Also, Christian Hensley, from Knoxville got a top-10 finish, placing 6th. Carlos Serratos led Monmouth-Roseville, crossing the finish line in 47th. A-Town and United were led by Hunter Mason and Jacob Dutton. They finished 64th and 81st, respectively.

Volleyball

Plenty of volleyball tournaments over the weekend. Orion beat Mercer County in straight sets to win the Judy Richmond Classic in Aledo. Macomb was 6th in the Mt. Pulaski Fall Festival Tournament. Lewistown went undefeated to claim the Fulton County Tourney and it was Annawan beating Brimfield in three sets to bring the Princeville Tournament trophy home.

The Galesburg Silver Streak varsity volleyball team split a pair of matches in a Western Big Six Conference quad meet in Rock Island on Saturday. The Streaks beat the host Rocks 27-25, 25-14 in their first match of the day. Kylie Fike had nine kills and two blocks to lead Galesburg at the net. Chloe McCarthy totaled five digs and Maddi Carlson handed out 11 assists. In their second match against Alleman, Galesburg took the first set 25-21 but would drop the final two sets 25-13, 25-15 to fall to (6-8) overall and (1-2) in the WB6. This time it was Chloe McCarthy with 7 kills and three blocks. Carlson dished out 16 assists and Sam Rogers hustled her way to ten digs. The Silver Streak sophomores won both of their matches on Saturday against Rock Island and Alleman to improve to (3-10) overall and (2-1) in the Big Six. Lauren Livingston had 17 kills on the day. Lily Hudgins totaled 33 assists and Abby Tucker had 16 digs

Football

In Saturday high school football, Ridgewood beat Stark County for the first time in their co-op history. The Spartans were victorious 43-30 and Sterling Newman was all over Morrison 55-8 in a Three Rivers Athletic Conference Rock Division contest.

Tennis

The Galesburg Silver Streak varsity tennis team hosted their annual Silver Streak Invitational on a warm Saturday at Art Fish Courts on the Galesburg campus. The Streaks could only muster one point for the tournament, with Kennedi Davis getting 7th in #2 singles.

Swimming and Diving

The Silver Streak girls swimmers and divers were in Normal, Illinois for the Normal Community Invite. Galesburg was 4th out of nine competing schools. Lauren Pio accrued a pair of 2nd place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 Breastroke to lead Galesburg.

Soccer

The Galesburg varsity boys soccer team shutout Limestone 4-0 on Saturday in Bartonville. Isaiah Mowen had two of the four Silver Streak goals in that one. The Streaks are now (6-3) overall on the season.

The Monmouhth-Roseville Titans scored in the final two minutes on a corner kick to defeat Princeton 2-1 on Saturday in Princeton.

Golf

In golf action on Saturday, the Galesburg boys were 22nd out of 23 teams in the Pekin Dragon Invitational at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin. Lucas Watson led Galesburg with an 85.
