$1.46 Million Investment for Colchester’s Argyle Lake

Macomb…Assistant House Minority Leader Norine Hammond just announced that the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity is releasing $1.46 million in investment for Argyle Lake in Colchester. This is part of a $1.8M project to repair and replace numerous structures at Argyle Lake State Park.

Representative Hammond applauded the release of funds and stated, “This is a long awaited project that will be a tremendous asset to the area, once it is completed. The investment in Argyle Lake’s docks, boat ramps, and dam is much needed for the safety and continued enjoyment of the park.”

The scope of work provides for an initial analysis to determine if the spillway meets safety standards. Based on findings, work will begin to rehabilitate the dam and dewatering structure. Also, docks and boat ramps will be rehabilitated and replaced. This will include replacing the pontoon docking system and walkways, replacing the docks and fishing platform at the concession building, extending the concrete boat ramp, repairing or replacing the handicapped boat access and site lighting. Lastly, roofing systems will be replaced on the shower building, shelters, and vault toilets with metal roofing systems.

In 1948, the state purchased the land from local farmers and homesteaders and erected the dam which created the lake. With its 93-acre lake for boating and fishing, 5 miles of rugged foot trails through forests, and full-service campgrounds, this heavily wooded, 1,700-acre site is tremendous asset for the area.

Locals and tourists enjoy the park year-round, whether fishing, snowmobiling, hiking, boating, or camping. The improvements scheduled to be made will dramatically improve Argyle Park and, thus, increase its use and enjoyment.
