Local High School and Junior High Sports Report for Oct. 30th, 2018

Volleyball

The West Central Heat volleyball team’s season came to an end last night in the United Class 2A Sectional semi-finals at the Fieldhouse at United High School. The Heat dropped the first set to Deer Creek-Mackinaw 25-19 and got off to a slow start in the second before falling 25-12. The smaller, scrappy Heat were led by Corinne Booton and Megan Schaley’s three kills each. Booton also had two blocks and seven digs. Sadie Lenz handed out three assists for West Central as well, who end their year at (21-13). Carson Smalley had nine kills and Morgan Burr dished out 13 assists for Dee-Mack, who improve to (26-10) with the win. The Chiefs will take on (33-3) Eureka tomorrow night at United’s Fieldhouse for the right to move on to Friday’s Supersectional in Beardstown. Eureka beat Bureau Valley 25-17, 25-12 in last night’s first semi.

Also in Class 2A IHSA volleyball sectionals last night, Orion was beaten by Lena-Winslow in straight sets, 25-17, 25-17 in the Riverdale sectional. The Chargers finish their season with a record of (33-5). With the win, Lena-Winslow is also (33-5). Orion was led by Sara Jacobson with 7 kills, 8 digs and 2 blocks, Mackenzie Grafton with 7 kills, 4 assists and 4 digs and Jenna Wooley with 12 digs and 6 assists. Lena-Winslow will now play Galena for a sectional title tomorrow night at Riverdale High School.

In Class 1A volleyball last night, the Wethersfield Flying Geese beat Lewistown 25-23, 25-13 at the Peoria Heights Sectional to increase their winning streak to 30 straight matches and are now (36-1) overall. Brittany Litton smashed 20 kills and Tess Anderson handed out 29 assists for Wethersfield. In the night’s first semi-final, Annawan’s Cinderella season came to an end at the hands of now (33-4) Hartsburg-Emden. Annawan, who ends their season at (21-12-3) were led by Ella Manuel’s six kills and Courtney Baele’s 10 assists. Kaley Peterson totaled six digs for Annawan as well. In what should be a great sectional final, Wethersfield will play Hart-Em at 6:00 tomorrow night at Peoria Heights High School.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville 7th grade Lady Titan girls basketball team beat Mercer County 20-15. Leading the scoring for the Titans was Elise Blaesing with 6 points and Carlin Sears and Meyah Hunter with 4 points. The 8th grade Lady Titans won 30 to 22 over the Golden Eagles. Leading the team in scoring was Lexi Finnicum and Chevelle Wolf with 9pts and Mariah Reading added 7pts.

Junior boys basketball began last night and the Churchill Blue Streaks won a pair of games over Rock Island Edison at home in Galesburg. The Blue Streaks seventh grade won by a score of 35-24. Jace Keith led Churchill with 15 points and Ayden Almaguer added 14. Churchill had no problem in the second game, winning 45-18. Easton Steck scored 16 points and Roman Wilson had 15 to lead the Streaks.

ICS won a pair of games against Abingdon-Avon. The Trojan 7th grade was victorious 23-19. Logan Corzatt, Zach Almaguer and Jake Steele each had four points for ICS to lead the way in that one. Steele iced game with 2 free throws with under 20 seconds left in the game. The ICS 8th grade completed the sweep on the night with a 24-22 win. Cross Merritt lead the way with 14 points and 4 blocked shots and 2 steals.

The United Red Storm 8th grade boys basketball team opened their season with a 39-22 win over LaHarpe. Abel Wilson led everybody in scoring with 19 points for the Red Storm. Aiden Jenk was nearly in double figures with nine points for United as well.
