Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Oct. 1, 2018

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan volleyball team went (4-1) on Saturday in the Orion Charger Challenge at Orion High School. The Titans went (3-0) during pool play, beating the hosts, Orion. That snapped a 12-match winning streak for the Chargers. Monmouth-Roseville then beat Brimfield in three sets in the semi-finals, before losing the rematch with Orion 21-13, 21-10 in the championship. The United Red Storm were also participating in the tourney. The Red Storm took 3rd, going (2-1) in pool play, losing to Brimfield. There was a 3-way tie at (2-1) in United’s pool but Brimfield was given the #1 seed in bracket-play. United would lose to Orion in the semi-finals 21-9, 22-20 but bounce back to defeat Brimfield 21-11, 21-17 in their rematch in the 3rd place contest. Both United and Monmouth-Roseville had two girls placed on the All-Tournament team. The Red Storm put Jerzi Johnson and Carly Thompson on the list, while the Titans had Carly Gillen and Camryn Jones make the team.

The Galesburg Silver Streak freshman and sophomore volleyball teams both participated in tournaments on Saturday. The Streak sophomores brought home the Burlington Invitational first place trophy, going (5-0) for the day. The Streaks defeated Fort Madison, Mediapolis, Iowa City West, Davenport West and the host Burlington Greyhounds. Lauren Livingston totaled 31 kills on the day. Lily Hudgins handed out an amazing 73 assists for the five matches.

The Streak freshman went (0-5) in the Rock Island Freshman Invitational.

Golf

The United Red Storm boys and girls golf teams hosted their annual Red Storm Open at Gibson Woods on Saturday. The Red Storm boys won their side of the tournament, shooting a 377 as a team, edging out Mercer County by one stroke. Drew Brown was the top Red Storm golfer, carding an 85 for 3rd place individually. Dyhlan Hepner was also in the top-10 with a 96 for United. The Red Storm girls were 2nd as a team, shooting a 417 team total. Emily Grodjesk was 2nd overall with a 96. Alex King, Erin Glisan, Paige McKeown and Haley Marshall finished 7th-10th individually for the day.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls golf team was 14th out of 15 teams at the Champaign Centennial John Macek Invitational on Saturday. Kirsten Osborn was 13th individually with an 82 to lead Galesburg.

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys soccer team defeated Peoria Central 7-0 on Saturday at Pattee Field in Monmouth. Freshman Jose Aquilar-Perez netted a hat-trick for Monmouth-Roseville. Also scoring in the match was Zemi Ismali, Kalente Corrall and two goals from senior Alan Ayala. The Titans are (9-8-1).

Despite outshooting Pekin 14-1, the Galesburg Silver Streaks ended their match with Dragons in a 0-0 tie. Galesburg is now (8-6-1).

Cross Country

The Galesburg High School boys and girls cross country teams were in Peoria for an invitational on Saturday. The girls were 23rd as a team, led by Kaitlyn Pedergast’s 38th place finish. The Silver Streak boys were 25th and Aaron Burrows had the top placement as the crossed the finish line in 78th.

Junior High

The Monmouth Roseville 8th grade girls Titan basketball team took part in the Galva shootout on Saturday. The Titans took on Lombard in their first game, putting up their highest scoring total of the season with 40 points in a win over Lombard. Leading the way for Monmouth-Roseville was Chevelle Wolf with 11pts. In the Titan’s second game of the day, it was Monmouth-Roseville 34 and Churchill 22. Wolf, Lexi Finnicum and Yoselim Hernandez all scored seven points each. The Titans are now (5-2) overall on the season. Churchill was beaten by Galva 35-33 in the Blue Streaks second game of the day. Milroy led the way again for Churchill with 22 points. Churchill is (2-5).
