Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Nov. 14th, 2018

Girls Basketball

At the Ridgewood Spartan Thanksgiving Tournament, the United Red Storm got their season and tourney started with a game against Orion. The Red Storm offense got out to a hot start and raced to an 18-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. Orion responded with a 19-12 scoring advantage to take a 34-30 lead at the halftime break and slowly extended the lead throughout the second half on their way to a 62-50 win. Carly Thompson led United with 15 points, 14 of which were in the first 16 minutes. Jerzi Johnson chipped in with seven points for the Storm as well. Orion got 20 points from Danielle Taets. Also last night in Woodhull, Monmouth-Roseville evened their record to (1-1) with a nice 58-36 bounce-back win over Galva. Carly Gillen had 21 points for Monmouth-Roseville. Lily Cundiff was nearly in double figures for the Titans with eights points. Darren Schilling was the only Wildcat in double figures with ten points. Riverdale beat BPC 54-40 and it was Ridgewood over Rockridge 47-35. Tonight, Monmouth-Roseville plays United at 6:00 as pool play continues. We’ll have that one on the PCSN with myself and Mitch McVey’s pregame show starting at 5:40 on AM 1330/FM 94.1 WRAM. Also tonight at Alwood High School in the middle school gymnasium, Galva and Knoxville play after the Monmouth-Roseville/United game at 7:30. In the high school gym it’s Riverdale and Rockridge at 6 and BPC and Elmwood at 7:30.

A-Town and West Central both won games in the 33rd Anual Lady Cranberry Classic in Oneida to setup a championship game between those two tonight. A-Town had to come back to defeat Mercer County 38-36. Mercer County led nearly the entire game before Emily Wilson scored with 1.8 seconds left on the clock for the Tornadoes. Wilson led A-Town with 14 points in the game. Emma Ginther helped out in the victory with 12 points. Mercer County was once again led by Dani Hagens with 14 points. In the nightcap, West Central also moved to (2-0) in the tournament with a 41-38 win over ROWVA. Mady Reed had 19 points for West Central to lead all scorers in the game. West Central takes on A-Town on the tournament’s final night at 6:00 this evening. ROWVA will play Mercer County for 3rd place at 7:30. Both games will be played at ROWVA High School in Oneida.

There were a pair of games at the Fulton County tourney at Valley High School. Lewistown got another blowout win over South Fulton 63-30 and Farmington beat North Fulton 52-32. Farmington and Lewistown will meet up on Friday night.

Play started in the Galesburg Thanksgiving Tournament as Washington beat Chicago St. Thomas More 41-10 at Washington High School and Metamora defeated Springfield 53-43 at Metamora. The tournament’s first games at John Thiel Gym in Galesburg will be on Friday night as Galesburg plays Rockford East at 6:00.

Junior High

the Monmouth-Roseville 7th grade Lady Titans beat the Sherrard Tigers 22-15 in the Prairieland Conference Championship game. Leading scorers for the Titans were Gracie Oma with 12 points and Meyah Hunter with 5. The Titans overall record is now 15-6.

The ICS Trojan girls swept Abingdon-Avon. 7th grade won 44-18. Carmyn Huston had 12 points. 8th grade won 51-29. Breck McVey had 11 points. 7th grade is 13-6 & 8th is 20-0.

The ICS boys traveled to Cambridge. The ICS 7th grade lost 38-34. Jake Steele led the way for the Trojans with 16 points. The ICS 8th grade won 38-28, with Cross Merritt leading the way with 20 points. Nick Lewis-Bresnahan chipped in with 13 points.

The West Central Heat boys split a pair of games against West Prairie. The Heat 7th grade lost 35-20, despite nine points from Colton Booton. The Heat 8th grade is now (4-0) after beating the Cyclones 41-21. Kaiden Droste had 19 points and 11 rebounds for West Central.

Cubs Open Regular Season Against Rangers

The 2024 MLB season is finally here. The Chicago Cubs visit the world champion Texas Rangers for Opening Day at Globe Life Field tonight. The Northsiders are looking to build
