November is National Diabetes Month and today is World Diabetes Day. Tina Canada, Diabetes Education Coordinator at OSF, offers some signs to be aware of for pre-diabetes and diabetes:
“Risk factors for either pre-diabetes or diabetes is number one age. The longer you live the more likely you are to get diabetes. And in the United States a little over 25% of those 65 and older have Type 2 diabetes. People who are overweight. Losing 5 to 7 percent of your body weight can lower your risk for diabetes. Living a sedentary lifestyle. Over 87% of adults are considered inactive and not getting enough exercise. And then heredity is just something you cannot get around. Genes cannot be changed,” shares Canada.
