Knox College's Winter Jazz Series Features Brazilian Musician

GALESBURG, Illinois — Brazilian singer and guitarist Luciano Antonio returns to Knox College’s Winter Jazz Series to present two free public events on Saturday, January 12.

The Luciano Antonio Brazilian Quartet will lead a workshop at 4 p.m. in Jay Rehearsal Hall and then perform at 7:30 p.m. in Kresge Recital Hall in the Ford Center for Fine Arts. Both events are free and open to the public.

Antonio’s work as a guitarist and singer showcases a contemporary jazz interpretation of traditional Brazilian folk music. A native of rural southern Brazil, he is a graduate of University of Missouri-Kansas City. He was guest artist at Knox’s 2014 Winter Jazz Series, and he performs throughout the Chicago area and across the country.

The workshop will show how to play Brazilian percussion instruments, including drums, shakers, and bells. Attendees will have the chance to participate in a traditional Brazilian Batucada, a sub-style of samba drumming. No musical experience or background is required.

The Knox Winter Jazz Series showcases global artists with diverse cultural perspectives for a free concert and one-on-one experiential programming with Knox students and the Galesburg community. Past guest artists have included CALJE (Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble), Juan Carlos Formell y Su Nuevo Son Radical, Juan Pastor’s Chinchano, and Stu Mindeman.

The Winter Jazz Series is part of The Knox Jazz Year, a series of performances and workshops encompassing all three academic terms at Knox College.
