Basketball
It was a busy day at West Central High School on Saturday as the Lincoln Trail Conference finally got their boys tournament started. The tournament has changed its format from a pool play format to bracketed play. The United Red Storm and West Central Heat got the day started with a morning match up. This was the fourth meeting between the two schools, with West Central taking two of them. Well, the series is now tied at 2-2 as the Red Storm get a 58-42 victory. Adam Johnson led United with 19 points. Evan Wynne and Cormaic Flynn had 15 points apiece as well. Jordan Roller had 13 to lead the Heat. United played top-seed Wethersfield later in the day. Wethersfield defeats the Red Storm 69-52 to move on to the tournament semifinals on Friday night. It was Johnson and Wynne leading the way for United with 16 points each. Coltin Quagliano had 25 for Wethersfield. Joining Wethersfield in the semis was Annawan, who beat ROWVA/Williamsfield 53-38. Also splitting a pair of games on Saturday was Ridgewood. The Spartans beat Stark County 65-44 in the first round and then lost to Princeville 53-38 in the quarterfinals. In the other match up on Saturday, it was Mercer County over Galva 51-46. Mercer County will play Princeville in the second semi-final on Saturday night at West Central High School. United enters the 5th place bracket and will see ROWVA/Williamsfield at 6:00 at the West Central Elementary gym, with the winner playing for 5th at the High School on Saturday afternoon at 3:00. West Central battles Stark County on Saturday at noon at the high school gym for 9th place. The tournament championship game is set for 6:00 on Saturday night.
Despite the blowing snow and freezing temps on Saturday, Galesburg High School got most of their games during their annual shootout. The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys and girls basketball teams both took on Byron early in the day. The Titan girls played very well in the first three quarters, leading by six points at the half and four points heading into the fourth period. The Lady Tigers would outscore the Titans 23-10 in the final eight minutes to get a 65-56 win. Carly Gillen led Monmouth-Roseville with 24 points and Lily Cundiff had 16 for Monmouth-Roseville as well, including four, 3-pointers. The Titan girls are now (15-10) heading into the final week of their regular season. The Titan boys also led at the half of their game against the Tigers in next ballgame from John Thiel Gym. The Titans led 25-18 at the break, but would fall 56-49. JC Sells led Monmouth-Roseville with 18 points. The Titans are (12-9) overall on the season. The Galesburg Silver Streak girls took on state-ranked Bloomington Central Catholic in the next game. The Streaks gave it all they had before falling 45-39. The next match up of the day was supposed to be a game between the 3rd and 5th ranked teams in Class 1A. Lewistown ranked 3rd and Eastland, 5th, were on the schedule but Eastland decided to not brave the trip due to the snow and cold. Galesburg bravely stepped up and took on the Lady Indians, playing state-ranked teams back-to-back. The Indians started fast and took an early lead and the Silver Streaks ran out of gas late, as Lewistown moves to (24-1) on the season with a 43-32 win. Sydney Shaeffer led Lewistown with 19 points, with 12 of those coming behind the 3-point arc. Andrea Sampson led Galesburg with eight points. The Galesburg boy’s game against Dixon in the finale was canceled as Dixon also decided against making the trip to Thiel Gym.
The Knoxville Blue Bullet boys basketball team got a nice 51-46 win over Western Big Six Conference Alleman.
In high school girls basketball makeup games on Saturday. West Central stayed a game behind Princeville in the Lincoln Trail Conference standings with a 57-45 win over Mercer County. United fell on the road to Princeville, 48-19.
Bowling
The Galesburg Silver Streak girls bowling team hosted their annual Invitational on Saturday at Northgate Lanes in Galesburg. The hosts claimed the team championship with a pin-total of 5282. The A-Town Lady Tornadoes took 4th with a team total of 3784 pins. Galesburg’s Hannah Leon was the top individual with a 6-game total of 1163. She shot a single high-game of 213. Abingdon-Avon’s Alexis Wilson was 2nd overall with an 1111 total. Alexis had a single-game high of 211. Galesburg also had Chloe Day and Casey Folger in the individual top-five, with 3rd and 4th place finishes. Ariel Voyles of Abingdon-Avon was 2nd on the Tornadoes squad with a 737.
Junior High
The ICS 7th grade beat Cambridge in the semi-finals 32-20 behind 15 points from Jake Steele. The Trojans would fall in the championship game to Kewanee Visitation 49-25. Leo Mahoney had 11 points to lead ICS.
8th grade boys basketball regionals got started on Saturday. The Monmouth-Roseville Titans started their 3A Regional at Mercer County in Joy. The Titans topped Sherrard 46-17 to improve to 14-5 and advance to the semi-final round on tomorrow night at 6:45 vs. Mercer County. Titan Scorers: Max Cole 12, Ashton Toal 10. United beat Knoxville 36-35 and will also play tomorrow night against Rockridge at 5:30.
