WAC Recycling Center to Close

Residents of Monmouth will soon have to find another place to recycle their aluminum cans after January 31st, as the Warren Achievement Recycling Center will be discontinuing their can collection program. Sean Cavanaugh, Marketing Coordinator, has more:

“The amount of money that is being paid for the commodity, the cans, has shriveled down to a nub. You just cannot get much for them anymore. People that pay us just are not paying us. It’s just the price of the aluminum. It’s not their fault it’s just the way it is, it’s where it is at. Over the past several years we were hovering around 6 tons or 12,000 pounds. When you take in the fact we are paying for those and we make the difference, it wasn’t very much. And to support an entire program and equipment and the machinery, to do that it was becoming a situation where it was not viable for Warren Achievement Center to be doing that anymore,” states Cavanaugh.

The program began back in 1982 and collected over 3 million pounds of aluminum cans.
