Monmouth-Roseville School District is partnering with Monmouth College to start a program to teach students how to apply the knowledge they learn in school to real-life situations.
The program, which is called place-based education, emphasizes hands-on learning experience and less on lecture and homework. Superintendent for Monmouth Roseville School District Ed Fletcher explains the benefit of this type of education:
“They’re really trying to connect what they’re learning in the academic classroom with the real world, and sometimes that’s the piece that’s missing. Kids will learn stuff… And they won’t necessarily always know why they learn it, and this is a way to bridge that gap.”
Once implemented, the program will start in sixth grade, then to fifth and fourth grades respectively.
