Iowa City, IA— On Sunday, May 5, 811 runners and walkers helped raise $42,000 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois (RMHC-EIWI) by participating in the Red Shoe Run/Walk. The 35th annual event featured a half marathon and 5K race, in addition to Ronald’s Run, a 100-yard dash for kids. The event also featured a Kids Zone and RMHC-EIWI’s annual Alumni Family Reunion Picnic, where families who have stayed at the Ronald McDonald House or a Ronald McDonald Family Room were invited to attend, socialize with other current and past families and reminisce on their experiences
“We continue to be amazed at the support given to our families by this community. We had over 100 more participants this year over last year, and our volunteers were out in full force making sure everyone had a safe, successful and fun experience,” said Heather Croskrey, RMHC-EIWI Development Director. “We are grateful for our donors, staff and volunteers and the impact they have on our families.”
Tom Rauen of Dubuque, a former RMHC-EIWI guest, won the half marathon with an outstanding time of 1 hour, 22 minutes, 39 seconds. Heidi Kestel of Tiffin was the top female half marathon finisher with a time of 1 hour, 37 minutes, 12 seconds. Samuel Marner of North Liberty won the 5K in 17 minutes, 53 seconds and Amy Vermeer of Iowa City was the top female 5K finisher with a time of 18 minutes, 9 seconds.
All proceeds from Sunday’s race will benefit RMHC-EIWI and the thousands of children and families they serve each year.
