China’s Restriction on Plastic Bags Leaves Monmouth in a Bind

Share

China’s restriction of plastic bag recycling from the United States is causing a ripple effect in Monmouth.

China’s so-called “green fence” restriction on items including plastic bags coming into the country has led the City of Monmouth to stop receiving plastic bags to be recycled.

Sustainability Coordinator Chad Braatz says the City is looking for a local or overseas market to receive the bags.

Braatz also says residents can still do their part to protect the environment:

“Recycling really does help, and it’s something you can do. It’s not something you have to depend on a mandate, a law, a politician. This is something you can do at home, everyday, maybe do a little bit to make a difference.”

19 million tons of trash is processed in the State of Illinois per year. Only 37 per cent is recycled.
