City of Monmouth Will Now be Required to Disinfect Wastewater

Share

The City of Monmouth will now be required to disinfect discharge from the City’s wastewater treatment plant.

According to a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit renewal, a disinfection treatment is required that is not in the existing permit. The new requirement will require a “capital improvement” of a disinfection system in the treatment plant.

Monmouth Mayor Rod Davies explains why the new disinfection system is needed in the treatment plant:

“They’re putting in a requirement for disinfection treatment, which we’re currently exempt from based on our studies and discharge to a non-contact stream that’s also not impaired.

But one of the main tributaries that this stream discharges to is an impaired stream because of all of the contact points on that point. So, they’re wanting us to disinfect all of our discharge.”

Monmouth City Council will be “exploring options” the City may have for the new mandate.
