United High School’s football coach, David Milroy, is optimistic about the 2019 football season.
The new year brings new changes for the United Red Storm football team with injury prevention being a top priority this season. After a short time last season in which twelve separate players were out of the game due to injury, Coach Milroy has attempted to prevent these injuries through more extensive core training among his players, and is confident that with a stronger core, they will be able to withstand much more, and stay healthy throughout the season.
With changes in training strategy, Coach Milroy is also changing parts of his coaching style. This year has seen a lot of input not only from the coach’s perspective but also from the players’ perspectives.
David Milroy talks about his experience with asking for a player’s perspective…
“I want to know why, not so much that they did it correctly or incorrectly, but why’d you do that? One of my ‘ah-ha moments came this summer. I still keep in good contact with Sam Brownlee, you know, he swings over once in a while, you know, we talk football and life, and he made the comment about how being gap responsible, in certain plays he had A-gap, but it was hard for him to comprehend that when the play moves, the A-gap moves too.”
The team’s first game is tonight, with United facing off against Rushville/Industry at 7 pm.
