Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 13, 2019

Soccer

The visiting Moline Maroons scored three late goals to pull away from host Monmouth-Roseville in a 5-0 victory Thursday afternoon at Pattee Fields. The Maroons gained a 2-0 halftime advantage with goals in the 13th minute and the 32nd minute. The Titans came out in the second half and stepped up their defensive effort, holding the Maroons to just one shot over the next 20 minutes. Moline finally broke through with 5:17 to play, cashing in a penalty kick, then added two more goals in the next three minutes. The Maroons held a 22-2 edge in shots. Monmouth-Roseville is off until Saturday when DePue comes to Monmouth for a 11:00 kickoff at Pattee Field.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys soccer team shutout East Peoria 5-0 on the strength of first half goals by Luca Gomez and Isaiah Mowen. Mowen scored again in the second half, along with Mason Martinez and Aiden Breslin. The Streaks, now (7-2) overall, got another shutout by Kyler Smith. Smith recorded three saves.

Golf

The United Red Storm girls golf team is now (8-0) in dual meets this season after beating Rockridge 198-225. Paige McKeown and Claire Carnes tied for meet medalist honors with a pair of 47’s. Emily Grodjesk contributed a 51 to the scoring quartet and Haley Marshall shot a 53 to round out the team total.

Volleyball

Macomb beat Galesburg 25-21, 25-13. Avery Rexroat handed out 14 assists, served five aces and scored 10 points. Kennedy Adair had five kills and one block. Maggie Vallillo hustled her way to 12 digs. Galesburg was led by Lauren Livingston’s eight kills, Maddie Carlson’s 19 assists and Brynn Atwell’s nine digs. Macomb is now (12-2) overall, while Galesburg drops to (5-6).

Elsewhere, North Fulton beat BPC and Mercer County knocked off Ridgewood 25-8, 25-13 in the Lincoln Trail Conference opener for both clubs.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan junior high baseball team hosted United for their final regular season home game at the Field of Dreams in Monmouth. The Trojans exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning and went on for a 14-8 win. Zach Almaguer had a pair of hits for ICS as the Trojans took advantage of five errors and seven walks by the Red Storm. United had three players with multiple hits. Jacob McElwee led the way with three hits. Tanner Rogers and Carter Rothzen had two hits each, with Rothzen knocking in three runs with a double. ICS is now (8-4) and United ends the regular season at (7-5). ICS finishes up play in the West Prairie Tournament on Saturday before the postseason starts next week. The Trojans play LaHarpe/Dallas City at noon on Saturday for 3rd place. The game will take place at Friendway Park in Colchester.
