Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 16, 2019

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan volleyball team placed 3rd at the Geneseo Maple Leaf Invitational on Saturday. The Titans placed 2nd in the pool with a (1-1) record, beating Wethersfield but losing to Annawan. That sent them to the winner’s bracket tournament on Saturday afternoon. Monmouth-Roseville then beat Mercer County, which avenged a loss to the Golden Eagles earlier in the season, but then lost to eventual tournament champion, Geneseo, in the semi-finals. The Titans would bounce to beat Kewanee in the 3rd place match to finish (3-2) on the day. They are now (10-6) overall on the season. Monmouth-Roseville had Carly Gillen and Delaney Woodard named to the all-tournament team.

The Galesburg Silver Streaks split a pair of matches in a Western Big Six Conference triangular at John Thiel Gym in Galesburg. The Streaks knocked off United Township 25-14, 26-24 but lost to Sterling 25-18, 25-25.

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans were defeated by the DePue/Spring Valley Hall co-op 4-2.

The Macomb Bomber soccer boys lost their first round match to Hickman, Missouri 2-0 on Friday in the Hannibal Pirate Tournament. The Bombers would bounce back and win 2 matches on Saturday to place 5th. Macomb beat Maplewood Richmond Heights 5-0 and then shutout Saxony Lutheran 3-0 in the consolation championship match.

Football

The Macomb Bomber football team lost a road game at Harvard 33-13 in a Saturday afternoon contest.

Cross Country

The biggest cross country invitational around the state of Illinois took place at Detweiler Park in East Peoria on Saturday morning. It was the First to the Finish meet. On the boy’s side, there were 50 teams and 561 runners just in the Class 1A division. Macomb was our top listening area finisher with a 17th place finish. Ridgewood was 40th and Mid-County placed 47th. Individually, Macomb’s Stan Melkumian was 40th and Monmouth-Roseville’s Carlos Serrator was 67th. In the class 2A division, Galesburg had Ben Vazquez as their top placer as Vazquez crossed the finish line in 74th place. On the girl’s side, there were 42 teams vying for the team championship and 471 individual runners. Again, Macomb was our top area finisher, as the Bombers finished 31st. Ridgewood was 35th in the team standings. Individually, Macomb’s Khyliegh Diggs was 112th, Marygrace Guthrie was 189th for Abingdon-Avon and Reese Putnam led Monmouth-Roseville with a 376th place finish.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan junior high baseball team ended their regular season with a 3rd place finish in the West Prairie Tournament in Colchester. The Trojans beat LaHarpe/Dallas City 12-1 to end the regular season at (9-4). Jake Steele led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double and three rbis. Three pitchers combined for a 2-hitter, with Steele getting the official win.
