Soccer
Short a trio of players due to injury, the Monmouth-Roseville Titan soccer team received a key performance from forward Steven Meza, who netted a hat trick in a 3-1 victory over Princeton at Pattee Fields Saturday morning. Dylan Corrales made a pair of saves for the Titans, who also saw freshman goalkeeper Wesley Defrietes get his first varsity action, playing the final six minutes. M-R held a 19-8 edge in shots. The Titans will host Kewanee tonight at Pattee Field in Monmouth at 4:30.
Volleyball
The Galesburg Silver Streaks won a pair of matches in a Western Big Six Conference triangular in East Moline on Saturday. The Streaks beat Alleman 26-24, 25-22 and United Township in three sets, 16-25, 25-22, 26-24. Mary Hicks led Galesburg in kills for the day with a total of 11. Maddie Carlson handed out 33 assists for the afternoon and Brynn Atwell totaled 22 digs and five aces. Galesburg is now (9-8) overall and (4-5) in the Big Six Conference.
In volleyball tournament action on Saturday, Orion defeated Mercer County 25-12, 25-12 in the Judy Richmond Volleyball Classic championship match in Aledo. Orion ended the day (4-0) and are now (13-1) overall. Sherrard lost to Western in the 3rd place game 25-22, 26-24.
It was Elmwood beating Princeville 25-16, 25-22 in the Princeville Varsity Volleyball Tournament title match. Elmwood is now (15-3) overall after going (5-0) on Saturday. Annawan beat Brimfield for 3rd place.
Junior High
The ICS Trojan junior high baseball team has qualified for another regional championship game after defeated Southeastern 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in LaHarpe. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the 3rd, the Trojans put up three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Leo Mahoney’s 2-run double brought home David Simmons and Jake Steele with the tying and eventual winning runs. Steele, Mahoney and Ty Corsaro combined to get the pitching win, with Corsaro getting the official win. The (10-4) Trojans will play (13-6) Carthage for the regional championship today at 4:30 at LaHarpe Junior High School. Carthage got a 1-0 win over ICS in the West Prairie Tournament on September 9th.
The United and Abingdon-Avon junior high regional semifinal that was scheduled for Saturday in Farmington was rained out so the two teams will play tonight at 6:00 in Avon. The winner will advance to tomorrow night’s regional in Farmington at 4:30.
The ICS 7th grade junior high girls basketball tournament finished up on Saturday at ICS in Monmouth. The host ICS Trojans won a pair of games, beating Mercer County 39-10 and United 35-26. Addison Gillen scored 31 points in the two victories. United also dropped a 36-9 game to Churchill. Churchill also got a 54-10 win over Mercer County. That gave the tourney championship to Churchill, who went (3-0) in the round-robin format. ICS was (2-1), losing to Churchill on Thursday.
Plamedi Nseka raced to an individual title in the varsity boys division at the Galesburg Junior High Cross Country Invitational on September 19 to cap off a week’s worth of personal bests for the Galesburg harriers. Nseka bested the 115-runner field in a new record time of 11:35 on the 2-mile Lake Storey Park course. It was the Churchill 8th grader’s second victory of the week, fresh off his 11:12 school-record performance at the Germantown Hills Warrior Classic two days earlier. Caidan Kogut (35th, 13:28), Andrew Peterson (37th, 13:37) and Luke Thomas (48th, 13:58) gave the host team three boys in the top 50 as Galesburg placed 7th of 17 schools. Lily Furrow earned a top-20 individual medal in the girls varsity division, clocking the fastest course time by a Galesburg female. Her 14:10 effort placed her 12th of 99 runners and led the girls to 8th place in the team standings. Olivia Owen posted a season PR of 14:56 to finish 37th and Dinah Galvin crossed the line in 51st at 15:33 to help secure the highest girls team finish in several years. Aaron Clark (14:45) and Cloe Gregory (18:14) were the top Galesburg runners in the open division races as both teams posted another 11 individual PRs.
Nseka’s record-setting effort at Germantown Hills paced the boys to 10th place among 15 teams. His final time eclipsed the previous record of 11:35, set last year by Max Martinez at the IESA State Meet. Furrow also set a new season PR with her time of 13:52, good for 29th overall in the girls race. The entire team showed great improvement as 23 of the 31 Galesburg entries posted season PR efforts and combined to drop almost 28 minutes from their previous best times.
The next junior high race will be the Dunlap Invitational on Friday, September 27 at Detweiller Park in Peoria.
