Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 25, 2019

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan volleyball team defeated West Hancock 25-18, 25-21 in a West Central Conference North Division match at Monmouth-Roseville High School. Ryley Huston scored eight service points, with four of those being aces. She also led the Titans in digs with eight and contributed five kills as well. Delaney Woodard handed out 19 assists and totaled five digs and Carly Gillen smashed 12 kills and had two blocks and five digs for Monmouth-Roseville. The Titans are now (11-7) overall and (1-1) in the WCC North Division.

Elsewhere in high school volleyball, Geneseo is now (17-4) overall after beating Galesburg 25-14, 25-13 at John Thiel Gym in Galesburg. The Silver Streaks drop to (9-9) overall and (4-6) in the Western Big Six Conference. Geneseo is still in the hunt for a conference title in their first year competing in the Big Six. The Maple Leafs are (9-1) in league play, ahead of (7-1) Moline. Lauren Livingston led Galesburg with three kills and a block. Maddie Carlson handed out six assists and Brynn Atwell had 10 digs.

Illini West beat Knoxville 25-11, 25-9 in a Prairieland Conference cross-division match in Knoxville. IW is (15-3) overall. They will take on (17-0) Quincy Notre Dame in an interesting non-conference match tomorrow night in Carthage.

It was West Prairie over Elmwood 25-20, 25-18 in a Prairieland cross-division match. West Prairie improves to (6-4), while Elmwood falls to (14-4).

Soccer

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys soccer team falls to (8-5) with a 5-1 Western Big Six Conference loss to Rock Island. Isaiah Mowen scored Galesburg’s lone goal.

Golf

The United Red Storm girls golf team is (14-1) in dual matches this fall after beating West Central 212-246 at Gibson Woods. Emily Grodjest was the meet medalist with a 47 for United. Elaina Fisher led West Central with a 53.

Junior High

The United Red Storm junior high baseball team will play for a class 2A regional championship today in Farmington at 4:30 after the Red Storm ended Abingdon-Avon’s season in the semi-finals last night. Despite getting out-hit 10-6, it was United holding on 10-9 over the Tornadoes. The Red Storm led 8-2 going to the top of the 4th before a furious late-inning comeback attempt by A-Town. Jacob McElwee and Nick Tyrrell had two hits apiece for the Red Storm, who also two rbis from four different players. A-Town pitching handed out 11 walks to Red Storm hitters. Weather permitting, United will play Nauvoo-Colusa today for the regional title and sectional berth that comes with it.

In junior high girls basketball last night, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans swept the Macomb Bombers. The 7th grade Titans won 28-22 on the strength of Brianna Woodard’s 13 points. The 8th grade Titans got a 37-23 win over the Bombers. Ashya Bates led Monmouth-Roseville with 13 points.

ICS also got a sweep last night over BPC. The ICS 7th grade was victorious 25-8, led by Katie Flynn’s nine points. The Lady Trojan 8th grade won 44-16. They were led by Camryn Huston’s 21 points.
