Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 3, 2019

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans took part in the Macomb Volleyball Classic over the weekend. The Titans breezed through pool play with a (3-0) record but dropped their two matches in the championship round to place 3rd. Monmouth-Roseville beat Ridgewood, Rock Island and Payson-Seymour before falling to eventual champ Metamora and West Central Conference foe, Macomb, 25-19, 25-19. Macomb also lost to Metamora to finish 2nd. The All-Tournament team included from Monmouth-Roseville, Carly Gillen, Ryley Huston and Delaney Woodard.

The Galesburg Silver Streaks placed 4th at the Quincy Early Bird Tournament. It was the same story for the Silver Streaks. They were (3-0) after defeating Belleville West, Lovejoy Technology and Kirksville, MO. In the Championship bracket on Saturday afternoon, Galesburg lost to Quincy 25-18, 25-11 and Kirksville 25-23, 25-20 in the 3rd place match. The Streaks had Brynn Atwell and Audree Peck named to the All-Tournament Team.

Orion claimed the championship of the Wethersfield Flying Geese Invitational on Saturday. After going (3-0) in pool play, the Chargers beat likewise (3-0) Mercer County 21-15, 21-15 in the title game. Princeville took 3rd by beating Eureka. Mercer County had Zoey Miller and Karlie Stineman placed on the All-Tournament Team.

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan soccer team went (2-1) in the Pekin Invitational on Friday and Saturday to place 2nd. The Titans opened up on Friday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to eventual champion Pekin. Monmouth-Roseville bounced back on Saturday with two dominating 8-1 victories over IVC and the Illini Bluffs/Farmington co-op.

The Macomb Bomber boys soccer team garnered the Consolation Championship of the Peoria Christian Charger Classic. The Bombers lost their opening round match to Cornerstone 2-1. The match was tied at 1-1 after regulation but the Bombers lost on penalty kicks. They would bounce back and get shutout wins over Illinois Lutheran, 4-0, and St. Thomas More, 2-0. Macomb had four players placed on the All-Tournament Team in Leighton Holthaus, Alej Curtis, Noah Bright and Carter Benson.

The Galesburg Silver Streak soccer teams placed 3rd in the Colin Smith Memorial Invitational at Stillman Valley High School. The Streaks beat Genoa-Kingston 3-1, lost to Richwoods 2-0 before defeating Woodstock 1-0 in the 3rd place match.

Golf

Monmouth-Roseville hosted the annual Titan Invite at Gibson Woods on Saturday. Quincy Notre Dame won the team title, with Peoria Notre Dame coming in 2nd and Macomb was 3rd. United was 13th and Monmouth-Roseville was 15th out of 20 total teams taking part. Alex McCulla was the individual champion with a 3-under par 68. Macomb’s Blaine Sutton was 6th with a 74. DJ Reading led Monmouth-Roseville with an 86 for 39th and Drew Brown led United in 43rd place with an 87.

Girls Swimming and Diving

All three Monmouth-Roseville swimmers took part in a quadrangular meet on Saturday. Mon-Rose, Freeport, Rock Island and Pekin were in Freeport. Titan freshman Addie Smith was 6th in the 100 and 200 freestyle races and she was also 6th in the 100 breast stroke. Sophomore Abby Sikorski won the 100 butterfly and was 6th in the 50 free and 100 back stroke events. Fellow sophomore Cally Tate was 1st in the 100 back stroke, 2nd in the 100 freestyle.

Junior High

The United Red Storm moved over the .500 mark on the season at (4-3) after their 16-5 win over Farmington in Alexis on Saturday. Derrick Sargeant and Jacob McElwee each banged out three hits. Sargeant also had a double and three rbis. Carter Rothzen knocked in three rbis and accrued two triples for the Red Storm, as well.

West Central defeated ROWVA 15-10 on Saturday in Stronghurst. Gage Stimpson led the West Central offense with three hits. Ethan Nichols had three rbis for the Heat, who improved to (2-6) with the victory.
