Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 4, 2019

Volleyball

The United Red Storm volleyball team hosted the Macomb Bombers at the Fieldhouse at United High School for a non-conference match up. The Bombers were coming off a 2nd place finish in a highly competitive Macomb Invitational Tournament over the weekend. It was only the second match of the season for United. The Red Storm get an exciting 3-set victory over the Bombers. Macomb took the first set 26-24 but the Red Storm would claim the final two sets, 25-17, 25-20. Josie Bentz filled up the stat sheet for United with 16 kills, 14 digs, 2 blocks and four aces. Riley Tyrrell handed out 21 assists for the Red Storm. Kennedy Adair had 7 kills and Avery Rexroat dished out 19 assists for the Bombers, who fall to (5-2) overall. United is (2-0).

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans also got a non-conference win last night in Abingdon. The Titans defeat the A-Town Tornadoes 25-13, 25-14. Carly Gillen led all players with 11 kills and six blocks. Mattie Gillen had six digs and Delaney Woodard totaled 15 assists.

The Galesburg Silver Streaks fell to Geneseo in a Western Big Six Conference match in Geneseo. It was the Maple Leafs first Western Big Six match in school history. The Streaks actually took set one, 25-22, but would fall in the 2nd and 3rd sets, 25-11, 25-23. Lauren Livingston had six kills to lead Galesburg. Maddie Carlson accrued 22 assists and Brynn Atwell had 15 digs. The Lady Silver Streaks are now (5-3) overall.

Orion beat Knoxville in straight sets 25-13, 25-15. Hannah Jones and Kailee Shreeves had three kills apiece for Knoxville. Shreeves also contributed five digs. AJ Rask had five assists for the Blue Bullets. Orion is still undefeated on the season at (7-0).

Elsewhere, it was Sherrard over Ridgewood in two sets and Williamsfield beat Peoria Heights in straight sets as well.

Illini West, Mendon Unity, West Hancock, Camp Point Central and Southeastern were all winners in pool play of the Southeastern Lady Suns Volleyball Classic in Augusta last night.

Soccer

A-Town gets their first win in school, beating Galesburg Christian 4-2. Scoring for A-Town was Myles Shreves with a pair, Tylor Miller and Ricky Torres. Tornado goal keeper, Isaac Simpson had nine saves on the night.
Galesburg beat Sterling in Western Big Six Conference action 2-0. Both goals were scored in the first half by Galesburg’s Jessie Rivera and Luca Gomez. Galesburg is (4-1) overall and (2-0) in the Big Six Conference.

Macomb was all over the Illini Bluffs/Farmington co-op 10-0. Ten different Bombers scored in the match.

Cross Country

Annawan-Wethersfield hosted their annual Titan Cross Country Invitational. Geneseo won the boy’s side. Monmouth-Roseville’s Carlos Serratos placed 11th individually. His teammate, Joe Rivera, crossed the finish line in 20th. West Central’s David Gaylord was 67th out of 102 runners. Geneseo was also the girl’s team champ. Galesburg was 3rd and was led by Emma Hawkinson in 6th. Monmouth-Roseville’s top runner was Stella Narkiewitcz in 12th out of 70 total runners.

Junior High

United Red Storm junior high baseball team beat West Central 15-1. Elliott Copeland and Jacob McElwee had three hits each as the Red Storm pounded out 16 total hits.
