Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for September 24, 2019

Volleyball

The United Red Storm volleyball team is now (10-1) overall on the season and (2-0) in the Lincoln Trail Conference following their 25-9, 25-14 victory over Williamsfield last night at the Fieldhouse at United High School. Josie Bentz had ten kills, Riley Tyrrell handed out 13 assists and Maddy Diaz and Kaylee Cornell led in digs with nine. For Williamsfield, Molly Warner had three kills, Gionna Ott totaled six assists and Liv Farquer hustled her way to eight digs. Williamsfield drops to (4-14) overall.

Also in the Lincoln Trail Conference last night, West Central is also (2-0) in league play after getting a 25-16, 17-25, 25-20 win over Stark County. The winning Heat were led by Mady Reed’s ten kills and 15 digs. Sadie Lenz dished out 26 assists for the the Heat as well, who improved to (7-4) overall. Stark is now (8-10).

Elsewhere in the LTC last night, Princeville and Mercer County begin their conference schedule at (2-0). Princeville beat Wethersfield 25-23, 25-13. Mer Co defeated ROWVA 25-12, 25-18. Also Ridgewood lost to Galva 25-19, 25-20.

Macomb is (17-5) overall and (1-0) in the West Central Conference’s North Division after their 25-10, 25-18 beating of West Hancock. Tatumn Lantz smashed seven kills to lead Macomb. Avery Rexroat had 19 assists and three aces, while Maggie Vallillo totaled 12 digs.

Soccer

After being blanked on 22 first-half shots, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans broke through in a big way over the final 40 minutes to post a 5-0 victory over the visiting Kewanee Boilermakers at Pattee Fields in Monmouth. The Titans finally found the net six minutes into the second half when Tony Aguilar-Perez assisted Steven Meza’s goal. Aguilar-Perez scored the next Titan goal, followed by a Darbin Garcia blast. With under 18 minutes to go, the Titans tacked on two more goals in a two-minute span. Meza split the Boilers’ defense to score from long range, and Paul Tha netted the final goal. In improving to 10-5-2 on the season, the Titans held a 34-5 edge in shots. M-R is off until Peoria Christian visits Pattee Fields on Sept. 30.

The Macomb Bomber soccer team tied Beardstown 1-1 and Abingdon-Avon lost to Western Big Six Conference Geneseo 12-0.

Golf

The United Red Storm, Macomb Bomber, Illini Bluffs and Havana girls golf teams battled at Gold Hills Golf Club yesterday. The Macomb Bombers went (3-0), scoring a team total of 153. That’s a new school record for the Bomber ladies. They were led by Karlie Wisslead and Laine Torrance’s 37’s. United went (2-1), shooting a team score of 201, beating Illini Bluff’s 211 and Havana’s 217. Paige McKeown and Emily Grodjesk’s 48’s. United is now (12-1) in dual matches this season.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys golf team lost to Moline 160-181 in a dual meet at Bunker Links in Galesburg. Galesburg’s Jason Runbom was the meet medalist with a 37.

Tennis

The Macomb Bomber girls tennis team shutout Jacksonville 9-0 in Jacksonville. Macomb is now (3-3) overall so far this season.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan junior high baseball team claimed another Class 1A regional championship last night in LaHarpe. The Trojans got a complete game, seven inning shutout pitching performance from Jake Steele in a 4-0 win over Carthage. Steele only gave up two hits, getting eight strikeouts. Zach Almaguer went 2-for-4 for ICS at the plate and Steve Gibbs had a double and knocked in two runs. ICS, now (11-4), will take on (17-1) Jacksonville Our Saviour in the Jacksonville Sectionals on Saturday at 11:00 at Alumni Field in Jacksonville.

The United Red Storm/Abingdon-Avon Class 2A regional baseball semi-final was postponed again to today. That game will now be played at 4:30 in Farmington. The winner will play Nauvoo-Colusa at 4:30 tomorrow for the regional championship.

The United Red Storm junior high girls basketball dropped a pair of games against Knoxville on Monday night. The Red Storm 7th graders lost 23-10. Addison Orr led Knoxville with seven points, while Alayna Penn had four to lead United. The Blue Bullets completed the sweep with a 23-15 victory in the 8th grade game. Ella Hubbard led a balanced Knoxville atack with six points. Alayna Penn and Amber Brunswig had four apiece for United.
