Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Oct. 11, 2019

Golf

IHSA girls golf regionals took place around the state of Illinois yesterday. Some were held in not so good conditions with wind and rain falling. One of those tough places to play was Sugar Maple Golf Course in Geneseo where United and West Central were taking part. The United Red Storm will advance as a team to Monday’s Peru St. Bede’s sectional at Spring Creek Golf Course in Spring Valley. The Red Storm finished 2nd overall in the team standings, shooting a 411, one stroke better than Alleman. Geneseo won the team competition with a 360. Individually, United’s Paige McKeown placed 5th with a 94. Her teammate Claire Carnes shot a 103 for a tie for 15th. Also scoring for United was Haley Marshall with a 106 and Emily Grodjesk with a 108. West Central had Elaina Fisher shooting a 118 for 35th place. In the other Class 1A regional at Hamilton’s Deer Run Golf Course, the Macomb Lady Bombers won the team title with a 353, 76 strokes better than Camp Point Central. Macomb’s Emma Thorman was the top individual with a 75. Also scoring for Macomb was Laine Torrance with an 84, Lily Vardaman with a 95 and Karlie Wisslead with a 99. They will all advance to the Jacksonville Routt sectional at the Jacksonville Country Club on Monday.

In the Class 2A regional in Galesburg at Lake Bracken Country Club, Washington is the team champ with Galesburg coming in 7th. The Silver Streaks will have an individual going to the O’Fallon Sectional on Monday at Far Oaks Golf Club in Caseyville as sophomore Kaylee Allen tied for 8th overall with a 96.

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans beat Southeastern in non-conference match in Augusta by scores of 25-10, 25-14. Carly Gillen had team-highs of nine kills, four blocks and nine service points. Delaney Woodard led the Titans in assists with 11 and Ryley Huston and Lily Cundiff tied for the team lead in digs with six. Monmouth-Roseville is now (17-10) overall.

West Central lost to North Fulton in another non-conference match up at North Fulton in three sets. Megan Schaley led the Heat with ten kills Sadie Lenz handed out 17 assists and hustled her way to 21 digs. Mady Reed totaled 22 digs to lead West Central, who fall to (11-9-1).

Abingdon-Avon lost to a talented Illini West squad, 25-16, 25-20. IW is (21-4) overall, while A-Town slips to (4-13).

Cross Country

The Lincoln Trail Conference held its championship meet at Kewanee Dunes Golf Course. The United Red Storm girls placed 3rd overall and were led by conference individual champ Anne Gregory. Bridget Brokaw placed 8th for United as well. The United boys had Ben McVey cross the finish line in 28th place. West Central’s David Gaylord was 31st.

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans soccer team battled their way to a 0-0 tie Thursday night against one of the top teams in the Western Big Six, the host Rock Island Rocks. The game concluded the regular season for M-R with a record of 11-8-3. The Titans will play Beardstown in a regional semifinal Tuesday night in Quincy.

Junior High

In junior high girls basketball, ICS won both of their games against Cambridge. The ICS 7th won 32-12. Addison Gillen & Ady Schisler each had 8 for ICS. The 8th grade Lady Trojans won 40-12. Reece Bertelsen had 11 & Taylor Turnquist had 10 for ICS. Both ICS teams are 9-1 overall on the season.
