Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Oct. 16, 2019

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans fell to Beardstown 3-1 in the Quincy Notre Dame regional semifinals. After a scoreless first half, the Titans fell behind 2-0 with 29 minutes to play. They would cut the deficit in half at 2-1 on a goal by Tony Aguilar-Perez with 20 minutes left but the Tigers would add a late goal to put the match away. Monmouth-Roseville ends the season with a record of 11-9-1 in co-head coach Zach Statham’s first year in that position. The loss brings an end to the coaching career of Aaron Sikorski. Sikorski is stepping down from the head coach position. He was one of the individuals that started the program from scratch 13 years ago and brought home a 2nd place trophy from the state finals in 2017.

Falling in the first semi-final in Quincy, the Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes ended their first season as an IHSA program. The Tornadoes lost to the top-seeded hosts, Quincy Notre Dame, by the score of 7-0.

Also losing in a regional semi-final was the Macomb Bombers. The Bombers were defeated by Peoria Christian 2-1 in the IVC regional in Chillicothe.

Volleyball

It was senior night for the Monmouth-Roseville Titans. They hosted the Macomb Bombers in Monmouth. After an exciting first set that saw neither club lead by more than one points throughout, the Titans got a 30-28 win. Macomb would come back to get set two, 25-18, and close out the match with a 25-15 win. Macomb is now (26-7) overall, while the Titans fall to (17-11). Leading the way for Monmouth-Roseville was Carly Gillen with 17 kills and 12 blocks. Delaney Woodard handed out 26 assists and totaled 16 digs. For Macomb, Tatumn Lantz smashed 13 kills, while Avery Rexroat led in assists with 25 and Maggie Vallillo hustled her way to 15 digs.

In the Lincoln Trail Conference last night, there was a good matchup in Aledo between two of the conference’s top clubs. The United Red Storm defeated Mercer County 25-18, 25-17 to improve their league record to (6-1) and (22-4) overall. Josie Bentz had nine kills for the Red Storm. Her twin sister, Jenna Bentz, had 13 assists and Kaylee Cornell led in digs with 10. Mercer County is (5-3) in the LTC and (18-11) overall.

Elsewhere in the LTC last night, West Central beat Williamsfield 25-22, 25-14. With the win, the Heat are (5-3) in conference play and (16-11-1) overall. Megan Schaley led West Central with seven kills. Sadie Lenz led West Central with 19 assists and 15 digs.

Also, it was Wethersfield over Stark County and Ridgwood beat ROWVA. Both matches went the full three sets.

The Galesburg Silver Streak volleyball team beat Peoria Notre Dame 25-17, 25-22. Lauren Livingston smashed five kills. Maddie Carlson led the Streaks in assists with 12 and digs with five. Galesburg is (11-17) overall.

Cross Country

The United and West Central High School cross country teams participated in the Illini West Charger Invite yesterday. United’s Anne Gregory won the girl’s race with her teammate Bridget Brokaw placing 4th. Natalee Gillette was also a top-ten finisher, crossing the finish line in 9th. In the boy’s race, Ben McVey was 18th to lead United. David Gaylord placed 16th for West Central.

Junior High

In junior high girls basketball, ICS lost a pair of games to Churchill. ICS’s 7th grade lost 30-29. Addison Gillen led all scorers with 23 points for ICS. The Trojan 8th grade lost 39-32. Reece Bertelsen led ICS with 11 points. Kiara Kilgore had 16 for Churchill.

In junior high football, the Monmouth-Roseville Titan 8th graders took on Rockridge at home Tuesday night. The Rockets jumped to an early 22-0 lead. The Titans responded with a TD by Rhett Willett and bootleg extra point pass from Tyler Finnicum to Nico Avendano. Rhett Willett Intercepted a pass and ran it back for a 54 yard TD to make it 22-14. The Rockets would hold on for a 44-14 victory.
