Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Oct. 29, 2019

Volleyball

Regional play started for IHSA volleyball teams. The Monmouth-Roseville Titans took their first step towards only their second regional title with an easy 25-6, 25-9 victory over Peoria Manual in the Class 2A Deer Creek-Mackinaw Regional. The (25-11) Titans were led by Carly Gillen’s ten kills. Fellow senior Delaney Woodard led Monmouth-Roseville in assists with 15, digs with three, service points with 12 and aces with seven. Shaila Campbell also led Mon-Rose in blocks with two. That’s the 8th straight win for the Titans and sets them up for a semi-final match against the 3rd seeded hosts, Dee-Mack at 6:30 tonight. In the first match in Mackinaw last night, Knoxville beat Farmington in three sets. The (14-16-1) Blue Bullets will battle 2nd seeded IVC in the first semi-final tonight at 5:30.

Elsewhere in Class 2A last night, 8th seeded Kewanee knocked off 6th seeded Mendota in three sets and will play (33-1) Orion tonight at 5:30 in Princeton. Mercer County plays the tournament hosts, Princeton, in the second semi-final.

Both Rockridge and Sherrard’s seasons came to an end in the Riverdale Regional. Rockridge lost to Erie-Prophetstown and Sherrard fell to Alleman.

At the Rushville-Industry 2A regional, tonight’s schedule includes the 2nd seeded and (28-7) Macomb Bombers taking on Beardstown at 5:30 and (29-6) 3rd seeded Illini West playing Rushville-Industry.

In Class 1A, Ridgewood beat Williamsfield 25-18, 25-17 at the Williamsfield Regional. Hallica-Warren-Anderson had nine kills and Madi Jones handed out 14 assists for Ridgewood. Molly Warner had four kills and Gionna Ott dished out 11 assists for Williamsfield. Tonight’s quarter-finals feature (23-4) Elmwood vs. ROWVA and (20-12) Brimfield against Galva. Tomorrow’s semi-finals pits (30-5) United vs. Ridgewood at 5:30 and the winners of tonight’s matches at 6:30.

At the Bushnell-Prairie City regional, North Fulton lost to Peoria Christian 25-22, 25-23. Tonight’s quarterfinals are set with West Prairie going up against Bushnell-Prairie City at 5:30 and (21-13-1) West Central vs. (10-19) Abingdon-Avon at 6:30. The winners of tonight’s matches face each other at 6:30 tomorrow night in Bushnell.

Wethersfield won their first match of the 1A Annawan Regional. The Flying Geese beat Stark County in straight sets. Wethersfield moves on to the semi-finals on Wednesday night against (26-5) Princeville.

Junior High

In junior high girls basketball last night, the Monmouth-Roseville 7th grade Lady Titans defeated the Rockridge Rockets 28-22. Leading scorers for the Titans were Tatianna Talivaa with 16 points and Brianna Woodard with 4 points. The Monmouth-Roseville 7th grade overall record is now 10-3. The 8th Grade Lady Titans led the Rockets 22-14 at half and would go on for a 36-26 win. Leading scorers for the Titans were Cori Izquierdo with 9pts and Elise Blaesing added 8pts. The 8th grade Titans overall record is now 10-5.
