Volleyball
The United Red Storm volleyball team placed second in the Orion “Charger Challenge” Tournament on Saturday. The Red Storm went (3-0) in pool play, getting wins over Annawan, Brimfield and Monmouth-Roseville. United beat Monmouth-Roseville again in the semi-finals but would be tripped up in the championship match by Orion, 21-10, 21-9. The Monmouth-Roseville Titans finished (1-2) in their pool with a victory over Mercer County in three sets and losses to United, also in three sets, and Orion. The Titans beat Annawan 21-17, 21-13 in the 3rd place match.
Soccer
Steven Meza scored two first-half goals and the Monmouth-Roseville boys soccer team held on for a 2-1 victory Saturday morning at Peoria High School. Meza scored what proved to be the difference-making goal with 3:01 left in the first half. Meza’s first goal came seven minutes into the game. In improving to 11-7-2 on the season, M-R outshot Peoria 21-9.
The Abingdon-Avon Tornado soccer team went (0-3) in the Orion-Sherrard Invitational. The Tornadoes fell to the hosts, 9-0. They also lost to Riverdale 2-0 and Princeton 3-0. Orion-Sherrard went (3-0) to claim the tournament championship.
Swimming and Diving
The Monmouth-Roseville High School swim team had a plethora of great finishes in the Galesburg JV Invitational. Cally Tate got a pair of 1st place finishes in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Abby Sikorski was 1st in the 100 freestyle and Addie Smith touched the wall first in the 100 breastroke.
Cross Country
Elmwood High School hosted a cross country invitational on Saturday. Monmouth-Roseville’s Carlos Serratos placed 20th in the boy’s race. On the girl’s side Stella Narkiewicz was 33rd for Monmouth-Roseville.
Junior High
The Monmouth-Roseville 8th Grade girls basketball team took part in the Galva Shootout on Saturday. The Titans opened up against Churchill, losing 41-27. Leading scores were Gracie Oma with 10pts and Meyah Hunter had 7. The Titans battled Lombard in their second game. Monmouth-Roseville ended up with a split on the day beating the Zephyrs 49-22, getting scoring from all 12 players. Leading for the Titans were Gracie Oma with 12pts.
ICS played Orion on Saturday in junior high girls basketball. The ICS 7th grade won 38-12. Ady Schisler had 10 points to lead the Trojans. The Trojan 8th won 40-23. Carmyn Huston had 14 points & Taylor Turnquist 10.
The Galesburg junior high boys and girls cross country teams each placed 15th of 23 schools at Saturday’s Dare Classic in Delavan but each squad was paced by a record-setting performance. Lily Furrow ran the fastest time ever by a Galesburg sixth-grade girl, finishing the two-mile race in 13:01. She earned an individual medal with her 18th-place finish. Plamedi Nseka (plah-mu-dee check-uh) broke his own team record with a time of 10:56, running second overall in the boys varsity race and less than a second behind the winner. He became the first Galesburg boy to run under 11 minutes in cross country. Overall, 26 of the 29 Galesburg entries posted their fastest times of the season.
